They are now, but they still aren't smashing teams home and away in the asian qualifiers. How well did people honestly expect them to do in 2002 though? Nobody expected them to get out of the group stages. Ditto for South Africa this summer.
Bahrain is actually a good example of what Qatar can do in a short space of time. In fact Bahrain is even smaller than Qatar and they were in the play offs with New Zeland for a WC place.
On a side note Saudi Arabia would not make any sense - that really is the place where you cant touch alcohol and all women are covered in public - they give the rest of the region a bad rep.
Qatar is light years ahead of that and I think a big event like this will encourage it towards further liberalisation for the good of the entire region.
I do actually think the best idea would have been a joint Gulf bid. UAE, Bahrain, Qatar & Oman - all have their own stadia already and the travelling distance would still be less than most of the single country bids. That really would have been something to encourage the growth of the game in the whole region.
All 4 could enter normal WC qualifying plus there would an extra place available to one of them via a playoff among the 4 hosts.
Please don't leave out slavery. To build these stadiums, many, many workers will be brought in and basically be used as slaves to build giant stadiums that will sit and rot after the WC ends.
Got to get better then.
Vietnam will eventually overtake one of those 3 I think. They'll be very good in about 20 years.
One result changes everything? I can't be bothered to list more of Qatar's recent results, but feel free to take a look.

It may. I keep getting a really strong feeling that FIFA have gone too far today. Almost like this is the beginning of the end for them.If UEFA and CONMEBOL withdrew from FIFA, FIFA are fecked....heck even if UEFA withdrew FIFA are done.
Personally I hope it does happen some day....just to see Blatter licking the boots on all fours.
In the last year they've beaten Paraguay 3-0 and lost 2-3 to Croatia. They aren't a great team, but they aren't as bad as you're making them out to be.
What was the weather like in 86 in Mexico?
Fact is there are homophobes all over the world, and i'd be surprised if they actually practice stoning in Qatar.

Statute
Article 201 of the 1971 Penal Code punishes sodomy between consenting adults (irrespective of sex) with up to five years imprisonment. (Schmitt and Sofer – "Sexuality and Eroticism among Males in Moslem Societies")
The Pink Book states that Sharia law is applied.
"In May an American citizen was sentenced to receive 90 lashes during a 6-month prison term for homosexual activity. However, the individual and his family rejected a pre-trial offer of expulsion without prison or lashes in the hope of being able to return ..." (USIS - Qatar Human Rights Practices, 1995)
In October 1997, some 36 gay Filipinos were reported deported (RW/2904)
In December 1997 the Manila daily, "Today" carried the following report (summarised): The Philippine Embassy in Qatar has reported to the Philippine government that the Qatari police are rounding up gay foreign workers and deporting them based solely on their sexual orientation. Although the number is unknown, it is increasing because of the Qatari government's firm resolve to rid their country of gay foreigners. It is feared that the crackdown might create a "domino effect" in neighbouring Arab countries, with Saudi Arabia in particular reported to be considering a similar policy. Male homosexual activity is punished with between five to ten years in prison. There were reports of suspected homosexuals being subjected to rectal examinations by the police to determine if they had engaged in anal sex.

Can you not read?
They also lost 4-1 to mighty Slovenia, 2-1 to Macedonia, 2-0 to Belgium...
Let's not forget that anyone with HIV cannot enter the country.

I hope England & Spain will lead the rebellion after this farcical day.
I can. Which of the 57 pages of this thread do you want me to read? Feel free to waste your time looking for it instead me. Or you could just write it down in two seconds, as someone who is not an asshole would do.
Has he got children or grand-children? Didn't think he had.Blatter wouldn't care, I think he probably has enough oil from Russia & Qatar to allow his great-grandson to retire.
The same Slovenia that the mighty England edged past 1-0 in the World Cup. With the home support backing them, they'll do alright at the World Cup i reckon.
Are you seriously comparing the varied temperatures of a large nation like Mexico to that of a tiny sand parking lot in the Persian Gulf?
Actually, you have to be more worried about the government, which hands down sentences of lashings to homosexuals and expulsion of foreign homosexuals.
FIFA Brand - Our commitment
OUR PROMISE
For the Game. For the World.
The world is a place rich in natural beauty and cultural diversity, but also one where many are still deprived of their basic rights. FIFA now has an even greater responsibility to reach out and touch the world, using football as a symbol of hope and integration.
Only with the unwavering dedication of every FIFA team member, every member association and every business partner can football in all its forms contribute to achieving FIFA's goals at a high level by protecting standards, encouraging competition and promoting solidarity in the world game.
For the Game. For the World.
OUR MISSION
'Develop the game, touch the world, build a better future'.
Played by millions around the world, football is the heart and soul of FIFA and as the guardian of this most cherished game, we have a great responsibility. This responsibility does not end with organising the FIFA World Cup™ and the various other world cup competitions; it extends to safeguarding the Laws of the Game, developing the game around the world and to bringing hope to those less privileged. This is what we believe is the very essence of fair play and solidarity.
We see it as our mission to contribute towards building a better future for the world by using the power and popularity of football. This mission gives meaning and direction to each and every activity that FIFA is involved in - football being an integrated part of our society.
OUR APPROACH
Develop the game. Improve the game of football constantly and promote it globally in the light of its unifying, educational, cultural and humanitarian values, particularly through youth and development programmes. Football development means investing in people and society at large. Football is a school of life.
Touch the world. Take world-class football action and passion at all levels to every corner of the planet through our 208 member associations. The broad range of competitions shows the many faces of football, spearheaded by the FIFA World Cup™.
Build a better future. Football is no longer considered merely a global sport, but also as unifying force whose virtues can make an important contribution to society. We use the power of football as a tool for social and human development, by strengthening the work of dozens of initiatives around the globe to support local communities in the areas of peacebuilding, health, social integration, education and more.
WHAT WE STAND FOR
Our core values of authenticity, unity, performance and integrity are at the very heart of who we are.
Authenticity. We believe that football must remain a simple, beautiful game played by, enjoyed by and touching the lives of all people far and wide
Unity. We believe it is FIFA´s responsibility to foster unity within the football world and to use football to promote solidarity, regardless of gender, ethnic background, faith or culture
Performance. We believe that FIFA must strive to deliver football of the highest quality and as the best possible experience, be it as a player, as a spectacle, or as a major cultural and social enabler throughout the world
Integrity. We believe that, just as the game itself, FIFA must be a model of fair play, tolerance, sportsmanship and transparency
A CHANCE AND A CHALLENGE
'For the Game. For the World' reflects the core element of our mission and represents both a chance and a challenge: a chance for us to contribute to making a difference to people´s lives, and a challenge to balance this social element with our traditional competence of overseeing the rules of the game and organising world-class competitions.
"We see it as our duty to take on the social responsibility that comes hand in hand with our position at the helm of the world's most loved sport.
Join us in uniting forces to develop the game, touch the world and build a better future!"
Joseph S. Blatter
It's ok that you don't agree. It's not ok that because you don't agree you have to behave like this. Cut it out.
That is really laughable, FIFA have and will do worse things than this, what on earth are people going to go leave FIFA over as a result of this?
Has he got children or grand-children? Didn't think he had.
Comparing a 1-0 victory to a 4-1 defeat makes a lot of sense.
ABSOLUTE feckING JOCK.
RUSSIA-
Cold, massive, major rascism problems, feck all footballing history.
What a shit place to host it!
I dunno, i've always had the impression Mexico was shit hot in the summer.
You've given me deportations from 1997, as i said i'd be surprised if things like that were still happening. Public displays of affection between homosexuals wouldn't be tolerated i imagine, but it still seems a bit strange that people are getting all pissed off that Qatar have got the World Cup because it's hot and homosexuality isn't readily accepted.

Only time will tell anyway so sit back and wait a while.
You do know that until Obama came into office...it was the same in the US right?
It gets worse doesn't it.MATCH Hospitality, a company partly owned by a Swiss-based marketing company, Infront Sports & Media. The president and CEO of said marketing company is one Phillipe Blatter, son of Sepp.
No idea about grandson...
Btw, MATCH Hospitality won a very lucrative ticketing contract for the 2010 WC.
Nah mate, its you who is missing the point .... its not about who is the 'best equipped right now', its about who will be the best equipped at the time of the tournament, in Qatar's case, in 10 years time.
Some of Qatar's proposed technology and science is amazing!!! And the legacy that hosts like Russia and Qatar will provide the game of football is far far superior than anything England could give the game.
England has been an amazing contributor to the world of football from its creation all the way through to the development of the Premier League. But I think the contribution it came make to growing the game has maxed out. Russia and Qatar will provide far more new fans to the game than England can over the next 10 years.
