A people's Revolution

Benghazi is in the hands of the protesters and the army and police have joined them there

Protesters clashing nowwith the police in Tripoli

Oh and it seems the lunacy gene run in the family..the fecker is warning of a civil war!!!!

I'm worried there could be a civil war, especially if the military splits in two.

Gaddafi's son sounds like a rambling lunatic in his public statement. A last ditch attempt to instil fear into his people, no doubt. But in all seriousness, Libya could get very messy. Gaddafi is not without his support and we've already seen that the armed forces, or at least parts of it, are more than willing to turn on their own people. Gaddafi and his sons will do everything they can in order to cling on to power.

Considering how tribal it is in mindset and how differently Tripoli and Benghazi think, not least how distant and remote they are from each other this could be a possibility.

At least more so than in any other vulnerable country right now.

feck..8 confirmed deaths of Egyptians in Libya already :(

Edit: sorry not confirmed yet

So what is the current status of Egypt Avatar? How are people feeling after a week of the army running the show?

So what I imagined then, it is worth noting that very few democracies that have emerged following revolutions have done it relatively quickly whilst conversely many have fallen to tyranny from such a position, you are absolutely right to be paranoid, moreso than ever before because any nutter can come along when you are at your most vulnerable. This essentially was my concern when the protesters pushed for the complete removal of Mubarak after he had conceded free elections in the autumn.

As long as you prevent the military from becoming complacent you ought to be fine.

Wasn't Qaddafi boasting about how Libya was much better than other countries(in the region) with regards to rights just a few weeks ago?

Also, Libya has the worst flag of any nation in the world. Seriously, it's just a green cloth.

Hope the people get their hands on Gaddafi and his kin and deal with them as they see fit. Whats going on there is absolutely unacceptable. Junior's speech just shows the ramblings of the mad men that are running that country.

There are too many young people in Libya these days. Barring a complete, totalitarian crackdown, I think Qaddaffi is out.

Well, apparently he he wasn't that far off the mark. Or wasn't he?

UK backed the wrong person. All for some lucrative contracts.

A Leopard and all that...I wouldn't put past the idiots running our country to give Gaddafi freedom of Lockerbie.

Poor Gaddafi....his sexy female 'bodyguards'

I've been a bit busy, have the media in general been trying to paint him in a good light now? Moderate, renounced his Nuclear Program...better than any potential 'Islamists' coming into power

I'll be honest, I don't know what the end result will be, but I really am surprised that this is happening in Libya too...all these military hardmen, not coming across too hard now, are they?

Actually it's the other way round. Gaddafi's son saying it's the work of external sources blaming the usual targets; Zionists and Islamists.

They've softened him up, maybe. :D

I thought he blamed the "whites", i.e. Zionists, Americans and Europeans, for trying to control the "greens".

I think the good Colonel is done, especially if his armed forces splits, as it seems to have done.

Random reports saying Air force/Navy pilots have defected and are bombing govt installations.(not confirmed)

War criminal. he and his sons. There's no civil war there. Just Qaddafi, his men and mercenaries.

It sounds like it's become really brutal in Libya. I hope it's over soon.

BBC reporting that a military source tells them the defected (?) pilots were ordered to bombard benghazi

if the army is divided significantly, it could be a civil war :(

That's awful if they're bombing their own people. The response of the international community will be interesting. If there is clearly evidence of a war being raged against the Libyan people and mass genocide, how can they stand by and just watch?
