A people's Revolution

Could you imagine that this pretty much happened a hundred years ago in Russia.

Even if revolution doesn't unfold in the rest of the Arab world, hopefully some of the theocracies will be forced to make changes. Not many people realise, but much of the welfare system and many of the worker's rights we have in the West (or in Europe, at least) were born as a result of what was happening in Russia at the time. A sort of concession, if you like. Regimes like the ones in Saudi Arabia and the UAE may have to loosen their oppressive grips over the next few years/decades if they want to survive.

This is completely insane...

If it was a military officer that came into the square and said to the crowd that Mubarak would be stepping down, it would seem the Army favors Mubarak to leave. The US military chiefs of staff have been in touch with the generals of the Egyptian military, this might be why there is a split message.

CNN is saying that even within the US govt. the messages were mixed up. So, the plus is that there seem to be factions of the Egyptian military that have been swayed into seeing Mubarak making his exit.

Now, it is going to be interesting how it all unwinds... once the messages are untangled, who got it mixed up. I hope we find out.

I don't know if it just seems this way, but the United States has it's fingers way too deep into the affairs of a country half-way around the world.

It's like the octogenarian billionaires who think they need tax cuts. Being the sort of person who was willing to devote their entire life amassing that money/power/whatever is how they got to where they are in the first place. Giving it up to kick back and play some golf isn't in their makeup.

At this point in time, it's about preserving his own legacy, which would be important to anyone who invested the last 30 years of his life as the ruler of his own state.

..am not there.. when am in the streets ,i won't post on the caf..don't have a smart phone

Anyway, it's not about the tv only now.. Already few hundreds of protesters have reached the presidential palace , say no evident threats .. will spend the night there and say the army is cooperative. Mubarak could be elsewhere ,may be in Qobba palace ..may be has left the city..no one knows, but people know his speech was montaged

yes, people think there are divisions in the military.. we just fear the presidential guard and the intelligence are with Mubarak.. it can cause lots of trouble and struggle for power in Egypt ..hopefully not..hopefully

The army has issued a statement before Mubarak's speech ..that they will listen to the people. May be taking a preliminary step? And they called it statement 1. They've now said that there will be statement 2 but news that it has been postponed till the morning

Tense times .. Am praying to God

Oh God. Let's not bring him into it. Then Egypt really will be in trouble.

Good luck tomorrow. I think we talked earlier in the thread about how the focus was more on the Army/others rather than Mubarak. Hopefully, they'll listen and push Mubarak out peacefully.

Very good interview with Wael Ghonim on CNN yesterday. He essentially made a great case for how allowing information in to autocratic or totalitarian systems erodes the power of dictators or otherwise undemocratic leaders, who have traditionally thrived on limiting external information and progagandizing inwards. If, or rather when, Mubarak goes, it will embolden opposition movements in Iran, Saudi, Yemen, and Syria, etc do the same.

Still hanging on, tbf, it has only been 3 weeks.

I thought earlier this week alot of the momentum had been sucked out of the protesters, but I see as I said earlier, this thing will really only start to bite when the general populace starts to join in.

That is happening now, strikes by transport workers, are a big step forward, next you need doctors, lawyers, and finally civil servants, you do that, and the state bureaucracy ceases to function, forcing the Army to either put down the masses or remove one man.

I think they'll remove the one man.

*Also I love news when big events happen, every channel cited sources saying Mubarak was going to resign, some even said, his message was taped a day before, and he was already out of the country.

Then you actually listen to the speech....hehe

All the hype of an imminent resignation probably annoyed Mubarak sufficiently to where he changed his mind. He's still delusionally clinging to the notion that he can step down without the perceived ignominy of being pushed out by foreign political forces.

It will be fun to see the next Government try to recoup some of the alleged $70 Billion that Mubarak has stashed away over the years.

This gets mentioned all the time, but the dictator is always the last to know when his regime is crumbling...I suppose it's understandable when you live in your own little world, where nothing you do is wrong, and there can never be a legitimate cause for anyone to question your authority.

I saw that $70bil figure in a Sydney Morning herald article, they might been simply reprinting a story from someone else....

Bank accounts in Geneva, Cayman Islands, tens of exclusive apartments/houses/condos all over the world in exotic locations....I just feel for poor Gamel, won't anyone think of him?

Here he was...potentially a few years away from rubbing shoulders on the world stage with the biggest players, and now he'll just be a rich playboy(not bad...but power is where the real fun is).

You forgot Iraq and Jordan

I have say credit where it's due - Al Jazeera have been terrific in reporting the whole thing. Special mention to the Guardian too who's live blog has kept us updated while not adopting this overblown rhetoric that Islamists are taking over the ME's oil.

Its on Yahoo news so it must have actually happened.

SSN confirming Mubarak has stepped down.

Massive crowds in the street cheering.

Power handed to military.

Opposition leader Mohamed Elmarabei...."This is the greatest day of my life. Egypt has been liberated".

Rumours that Mubarak already out of Egypt.

(Obama statement at 18:30 GMT)

To your average Egyptian

Power being handed over to the Army, and not Suleiman is also a good sign, but as I'm sure everyone is well aware, now the hard part starts. Actually getting something that resembles democracy(it would be foolish to expect a full on western democracy at this moment) and making sure that this momentum carries through the next couple of months, while the changes in legislation are made.

Never saw that coming.Congratulations the people of Egypt proud of you.

30 years in power....and he goes knowing the whole of Egypt fecking hates his guts  The celebrations resemble a World Cup win....that's how much your people hate you Hosni. Now that you're gone, watch what the newspapers start to print about you, your family and your associates.

Now then. How long until Egypt's blockade on Gaza is lifted?

stop looking at my deleted posts you wankers. Top probably, and Raoul I bet!

While I'm sure he's disappointed, he needs to realize he's now got no responsibilities and $70bn burning a hole in his pocket.

Brilliant, absolutely brilliant. Congratulations Avatar, and all Egyptians

Is it too much to hope that this is only the beginning of the end for repressive regimes in the region and continent?

Apparently the tanks at Tahrir have reversed their turrets pointing outside the square. Several have draped Egyptian flags on their tanks.

I think it's too much to hope they will be applied in the same, generally peaceful manner, if it were to happen.

Wonderful news!

Let's hope it's a start of better life for Egyptians, and hopefully be model neighbours.

You'v a taken part in making history Avatar. May Allah SW be with you all...
