Come one man, I said the idea that a professional footballer playing for Manchester United not understanding the offside trap is growing on me, it now sounds like a wholly realistic possibility. In fact, I'm sure there are numerous defenders who don't actually understand what offside is, and that there are goalkeepers who still don't understand the back pass rule.

Obviously I was exaggerating but it could be entirely plausible that he did not realise we were trying to play the offside trap...

Frankly, it's ludicrous to say that "he always gives his all, he just wasn't paying attention this time" - I mean, what the feck? The two are mutually exclusive. Someone who gives his all also pays attention to what's going on! So he either wasn't fully focused which is the least you could expect from someone with his, ahem, limited ability - or he simply failed to understand quickly enough that our defenders were stepping out to play Carlton Cole offside. Take your pick.

He's fecking awful and has no redeeming qualities. Makes me more irritated at Fabio being frozen out.

Was a bad mistake. I think Fabio is a much better player. I can only think that he's 100% off else he'd get a chance.

Obviously not. Buttner isn't defensively aware enough. He might have been paying attention but that doesn't mean he's sharp enough to react properly to a given situation.

When he's out there Buttner often has a confused look on his face as if he doesn't know whether he is at Old Trafford or in Sainsbury's.

So so poor for the goal. At no time did he attempt to move up. Honestly don't know what he was thinking. He must have been day dreaming.
But I've said it already, he just isn't good enough and can't defend. I would definitely let him go in January whether it be permanent or on loan then bring on someone else.

Thankfully we didn't splashed too much for Beavis & Buttner... De Gea should 'fix' his teeth after this shite.

I don't know what's going on with Fabio but we might really look somewhere else for a left back who knows what is going on the pitch.

Of course I do, but I also expect our central defenders to actually be aware of whether it has worked or not, buttner has only just come on, probably off the pace so why was nobody telling him to push up? Then why did nobody realise it didn't work until he was long gone. It's Carlton fecking cole, he's slower than a snail. Not sure why I'm bothering here, consolation goal.

What? Are you actually suggesting that Smalling should yell "Oi, Buttner-dude. We're trying to play this opponent offside, so please move your feet forward a few yards!!". The other players are not baby-sitters - they have to expect that their teammates actually do what they're supposed to. They can't waste time teaching basic defending during a game.

It's pretty obvious (and it has been since his first game) that he's absolutely woeful defensively. Even if you give him the benefit of the doubt today (maybe he just really needed a power nap) you can watch every game he played for us and pick out at the very least a few massive defensive blunders ranging from generally being unaware to his surroundings to shifting an opponent on to the wrong (in the view of a defender) foot. The number of basic errors that he makes on a regular basis is simply staggering considering he's actually a "professional defender". It's good fun and all, watching him charge around like a headless chicken and getting stuck in, but his defensive "qualities" are practically non-existent.

School boy error, a lack of concentration, really poor defending.

What annoys me more than the feck up in playing Cole onside, is the fact he made no effort whatsoever to get back to at least try to make up for his feck up.

Looks like he just doesn't give a.

I don't understand people criticising Moyes for not putting Fabio on. If he doesn't play there must be a good reason for that and Moyes certainly knows more than the rest of us about how he does in training. Buttner is obviously never going to play a significant role in our first team but we have to make do with what we've got. That said, it was a very, very poor error, no excuses for that. He needs to do better.

The reason we criticize him is because Fabio is far better then buttner has ever been, and can cover either full back position much better then buttner can. Making do with what we've got would be putting Fabio on the bench, not buttner.

Also people saying even sir Alex didn't rate Fabio are wrong. He clearly did rate him, he was our starting right back in the second half of 10/11 and was one of our best players starting against Barca in the champions league final. Imagine buttner against them  He'd look so lost, moreso then normal.

Because Fabio is by far the better player, no one would argue that (Moyes maybe). Fabio hasn't been given a chance over Buttner, that's what so hard to gather for us. Fabio has shown more in the few minutes he has had than Buttner has done this entire season.

We can look to the point that we don't see what is happening at training and fair enough but Saturdays are what counts and Buttner struggles with them.

Have to think Fabio has refused to sign a new contract and is gone, so Moyes is trying to get most of Buttner - otherwise there has been nothing in his performances to suggest he is even close to what Fabio has done here and at QPR to get in ahead of him.

He's a United player (for now) - so do hope he gets better (faint hope).

well according to paceme, fabio is utter garbage in training so i guess this is what we're left with

The thing is even his attacking game isn't impressive, he likes to do those weird and pointless step overs, his crossing is a bit meh. He loves to attack that's for sure at least.

He's completely pointless. He offers nothing other than trickery and chances for the opposition. I'd rather us play Evans at left back if necessary.

Gotta be one of Fergie's worst signings ever.

He loves to attack, he's just not very good at it either. Very little end product. He could develop into a good player but he needs lots of games for it. Never going to happen here.

Nah, very little risk involved given the low fee right?

True....but why was he signed? I mean...did Fergie see a video or something....did the scouts visit and coincidently he just had a few good games. I just can't see how anyone watching him could think he was a good signing, or useful signing for united!!??

The annoying thing is that even if you think we got him so Fabio could go out on loan and come back better for our long term future benefit, it isn't happening. So a waste of time, really.

Oh well, we'll always have that debut goal against Wigan.

It clearly isn't about performances on match day, there's something else going on. Maybe Fabio doesn't apply himself in training, maybe it's contractual issues. Whatever it is, Moyes must have a good enough reason to keep Fabio out of the squad and I refuse to hold that against him as long as I don't know the full story (which will probably never happen).

It seems to me we're just holding out until the January window opens so we can bring in a real backup option and forget about both Buttner and Fabio. If we don't do that we have a real problem on our hands, as this situation can't continue, but I'm hopeful it won't get that far. Ideally, we'd bring in someone like Luke Shaw to allow Evra more rest and be ready to take over when he leaves.

It happens.

Is there any manager who hasn't signed a player you didn't understand the reasons for signing? And to be fair, I can see buttner's terrible defending possibly not being exposed at a lower level.

Our dutch scout said he didn't rate him, I posted the link earlier.

I feel sorry for him, he's getting dog's abuse for stepping up for the offside trap.

If we hadn't let Cole score we wouldn't be giving him half as much stick.

He's a backup left back we brought for buttons, what do you expect?

The bizarre thing is why does Moyes rate him in front of Fabio.
