It's not that daft to say he could play Left Back. I watched him play for Brazil once and was given the task of man marking Messi which indirectly resulted in Anderson spending most of the game at left back. He did quite well.

Anderson also also once claimed that LB is his favourite position.

He's right about Scholesy though.

It simply is because it's obvious to anyone except the truly blinkered that he is a midfielder.

I'm still not convinced that interview was actually real. I remember there was some talk about him being lost in translation or something like that.

I seem to remember Anderson actually saying that he could play left back, but that isn't really the point. He's become a parody of himself, has Scholesy.

Agreed, and I also think he is more an attacking midfielder.

I think he, like how we have seen with Nani of late last season and the beginning of the current one, needs to be given the chance to impose himself on a game and show why Fergie once said he can be Scholes' nearest replacement.

That will come with a combination of hard work and a little confidence from the manager. If he succeeds on both fronts, he will make the muppets forget about  quicker than you can say "Ozil".

And it was his favourite position. It makes even more sense to try him there.

I also said Obertan should be played as a striker. And Tosic should be played on the right/behind striker like Messi. These were also mocked initially, but I saw a few more people saying the same thing later in the season.

Given Obertan had played centrally and Tosic had played wide right cutting in for their respective u21s that was hardly a ground-breaking prediction.

I'm a big fan of Anderson. I think his composure and, now, his experience, for a player of his age is immense.

The only thing I find annoying is those who cling to the notion that many of us had before we had ever seen Anderson play that he would be some sort of Ronaldinho or Brazilian attacking midfielder. He never has been, and he never has looked like such a player. What Anderson is instead is a tenacious ball winner with superior athleticism, energy and technical ability. He is more of a Keane or Ince than a Scholes-type of player. I don't think we even have any evidence that United's scouts thought he would be a natural goal-scoring midfielder when the club went for him.

So a tenacious ball-winner with superior athleticism, energy and technical ability. Plus can fill in at fullback. Our very own Essien. Sans long-range shooting ability.

Anderson is no left back. He is a hardworking box to box midfielder. I can't understand why so many of you are writing him off at age 21. Ok he will never be a goalscoring midfielder but he is a brilliant talent whose specific characteristics may allow us to use 4-4-2 more often.

I thought the left back thing was a mistranslation and he meant playing wide left

More likely if you look at where he played in the past.

I still have faith in Anderson. He has all the skills and talent to succeed, seems more of a mental thing with him. If he sorts that out (and grows up), he will be a huge success. Ppl were raving about him not too long ago

It's more like consistency and expectations from the fans...

Anderson has done a marvelous job as a 22 yr old. Shot a penalty in the CL's for us, not to mention he's bullied the likes of Gerrard and Fabregas... Scored against Spurs...

His best weapon is to distract a GK when we're having free kicks and do not EVER underestimate this skill, scrolling back to around 3 free kicks, catch of Anderson doing his dance and glaring at the GK, for example Hargreave's free kick, it is Hilarious.

If Anderson can keep things a bit more simple and possibly drift a bit left and start getting good crosses in like Fletch, I"m sure this year will be his break through season. I'm going with Anderson for 5 goals and 10 assists.

so a 100% assist to games ratio then ;)

He's got a lot to prove. Yes he's only 22 but so far he's not really shown any real consistency at doing anything really well over a period. Midfield is a big concern and I would like to see some regular combinations featuring there. Nobody except Fletcher is a certainty. For different reasons, none of Carrick, Anderson, Gibson, Hargreaves and Scholes have featured regularly over the last season or two. Scholes on current form can't be left out but at his age it will be an issue of nursing him through as the season gets tougher. Young Cleverley may get a chance but probably nothing more than appearance off the bench and the CC of course.

I don't think chopping and changing the midfield helps with consistency both individually and the team. Some must feature more regularly than others. Quite where Anderson fits in remains to be seen. Clearly he has talent but it needs to be harnessed into a specific role. Injuries and maybe off field antics don't help his cause.

We missed out on Ozil which was a great pity but I see the paper talk is now on Van der Vaart and Raul Merieles. We definitely need consistent and reliable quality in the middle. Big name signings with little re-sale value and who demand high wages goes against current transfer policy though.

Started football training yesterday according to SAF in his press conference

'But my favourite position is left-back in a 4-4-2 formation, the position of Roberto Carlos, and I've already played there for Brazil.'

How many times have Brazil played a traditional 4-4-2 ?

That Carlos left back position had him playing more as a winger then defender.

SAF spent a bit of time talking about Anderson at the presser. Already know that he started training but, he was asked if he'd kick on this season and maybe add goals. Summary of what he had to say was

My Summary said:
Has a fantastic attitude, he a real passion to train every day, to play every game every minute.

He is an incredible talent.

At 21 he doesn't quite have the maturity to understand that it is a squad game and can't play every minute and they don't if they'll ever get him to but, then again maybe they don't really want to because they don't want to curb it to the point where they may want to leave.

He started to talk about wanting to leave last year and he didn't talk him out of it and SAF let him get it out of his system. He had perhaps and then the injury hit but, perhaps it's a good thing because he can analyze the sit-y-ation at Unite.

Last week came to SAF saying I am ready I am ready I am ready.

Asked if the car crash would focus him and said that doesn't think it was bad as it was made out to be and asked if he was at least worried when he heard about it : like his own kids when they get to 16/17 and go out to the disco -you worry about young people under you and when they are going to come back.

And it was his favourite position. It makes even more sense to try him there.

No, it doesn't. We have the best left back in the world there already, with one of the most promising young ones just behind him.

I also said Obertan should be played as a striker. And Tosic should be played on the right/behind striker like Messi. These were also mocked initially, but I saw a few more people saying the same thing later in the season.

What happened to Tosic, again?

Evra is the only player in the team who does not get a rest during the season. I think Anderson would be better at LB than Fabio.

That is a different debate.

Can we stop feeding the Anderson at LB discussion- it isn't going to happen. He is a central midfielder. It's what he was bought for, it is what he will excel at, magnificent engine, very good eye, strong and just needs to learn to better weight his passes.

Shots on target will be a bonus - let alone goals but, once he has the confidence of playing consecutive games, think we'll perhaps finally see him do better in the shooting department. He has the technique to strike the ball so it seems, just needs that bit of luck to perhaps give him the confidence to do it right in games.

It's great to hear Fergie say that about his attitude, what with a lot of people citing that as a problem of his of late.

I wouldn't worry about his shooting, I would worry about how wasteful he is in possession and how little he shows himself open for teammates. That's what has stood out for me every time I have watched him. He is a big strong lad with a good eye for a pass but he is very direct and doesn't do the simple stuff at all well.

I'm sure Anderson would be excellent there - he's a very gifted player - however, it's an absolute waste of his talents.

Though I'm sure you don't believe he's technically gifted enough to be a hit anywhere else.

This is true - I cannot see why people call him technically gifted. He is no Micah Richards either though. I think he can do OK in midfield, but left back requires less technical ability.

It's irrelevant, obviously. He's an amazing athlete, an astute dribbler, has great vision and a good engine. Far less talented and athletic players than Anderson have made a name for themselves in football.

Not sure about the great engine. He was huffing and puffing his last season and hardly made it the full 90. If he comes in lean and mean I think he will definitely challenge for a place, but it's all up to him and how dedicated he is. He's got the potential, and has shown glimpses of his talent, now it's time to put it all together on a consistent basis.

For some reason people seem to forget that in his first two seasons Anderson never got a chance at building up fitness or getting a break from football. In his first season he was coming of injury but, if not mistaken played in the Copa Libertdores that summer as well. Second season was part of the Brazil squad at the Olympics.

In that time he's got this stigma that he can't finish games, partially true because he did put in a lot of work / effort and some point after the 60-70 mark would tire.

Last season for me that wasn't the case. If you look at the games he played from the game he played against Spurs (Carling Cup) till the unfortunate Fulham - he was putting in very good all action performances for pretty much the full 90 and it was for several games straight in a very short span.

Coincidentally last season was also the first time he'd got a proper rest and pre-season with us.

Not saying he can't improve on fitness but, also think he had done quite well to be able to finish games off at a high level.

Edit: In 2007 before he joined us - he played in Copa America - not Libertadores.

Sir Alex has revealed that Anderson spoke about leaving United last season because he wanted to be in the team every week. But now the Brazilian is back in football training following a six-month lay-off, the boss hopes to hone his midfielder's enthusiasm and ability so he fully realises his “wonderful talent”.

It is interesting that Sir Alex chose not to make a widely-predicted move to sign Germany international midfielder Mesut Ozil from Werder Bremen. “No, I wasn’t disappointed [not to sign him],” the manager said of Ozil, who has now joined Real Madrid. Anderson may well be the reason for that. The challenge for United now is to get the 22-year-old to pick up the form that drew lavish praise during his first season at the club in 2007/08.

“We certainly hope [he kicks on this season], because the boy is a wonderful talent,” enthused Sir Alex.

“He has got a great personality for playing football. He loves playing, he loves training. He wants to train every day and play every minute of every game.”

But therein lies part of the problem. “He’s 22 and doesn’t have the maturity to understand that we have to operate with a squad here. When he understands that, he’ll be a fantastic player here.”

Much like taming Wayne Rooney’s aggression, controlling Anderson’s enthusiasm is a matter which must be dealt with carefully.

“Whether we can change that mentality he’s got is difficult to say,” said the boss.

“I don’t want to change it in many ways because it’s so wonderful to see someone who wants to play football every day and play every minute of every match. If you get that enthusiasm, you have to make sure you don’t
check it to the point that you lose because he wants to leave because of it.

Last season, he was talking that way because he wasn’t playing in every game. So we have to hope the maturity comes, and maybe it will have been good for him being out injured for this spell. He will have had a good look at the situation at United.”

Anderson’s suggestion that he would leave was more like blowing off steam rather than making genuine endeavours to leave Old Trafford, but Sir Alex says the boy from Porto Alegre (which literally means ‘Happy Harbour’) has returned to training this week displaying typical eagerness.

“I didn’t need to talk him out of leaving, I just let him get it out of his system. Unfortunately for him, he got the injury around that time, and that quelled the storm in his body. He’s come back and has the same enthusiasm.

He came to me last week and said, ‘I’m ready, I’m ready’. It’s fantastic to see that in a young lad. It’s great to see. But he is a great player and he will get his opportunities here. I think everyone has seen the quality he has and he has played some fantastic games for us. He will play many more.”
