Arsenal are a shambles

Even when they were having their wobbles six or seven years ago, they were still fun to watch.

They don't have any scrappers in that team, let alone players with in-game intelligence.

I don't know why people big them up as title contenders, they always flatter.

They just need shit results against Bournemouth and FC Cologne for the meltdown to be complete.

Nah, they'll turn it on v Bournemouth, Ozil will look quality, and it's all fine until the next time.

Arsenal are paying the price for accepting mediocrity for over a decade. For all the plaudits Wenger got for keeping them in the top 4 during the stadium payments, all it did was provide an excuse for falling behind the other top clubs, not just in England, but across Europe. It's a mindset and attitude that has been allowed to permeate the club and it's affecting everything that happens there from top to bottom.

From winning their first Premier League in 97/98, to finishing runners-up in 04/05, Arsenal didn't finish outside of the top two positions, winning the league three times, the last of which was the unbeaten season. In that time they also won four FA Cups, as well as reaching a fifth final. In 05/06 they reached the Champions League final, but also finished 4th, 24 points off top, and got turfed out of the FA Cup in the fourth round, and that basically set the tone for the next decade.

06/07: 4th in the league (21 points off top). Last 16 in the Champions League, knocked out by a PSV side that got tonked 4-0 on aggregate in the next round. FA Cup fifth round replay defeat to Blackburn.

07/08: 3rd in the league (4 points off top). Quarter finals in the Champions League, knocked out 5-3 on aggregate by Liverpool after drawing the first leg at home. FA Cup fifth round defeat, 4-0 away to Manchester United.

08/09: 4th in the league (18 points off top). Semi finals in the Champions League, knocked out 4-1 on aggregate by Manchester United, lost both legs. FA Cup semi final defeat to Chelsea after being 1-0 up.

09/10: 3rd in the league (11 points off top). Quarter finals in the Champions League, knocked out 6-3 on aggregate by Barcelona after drawing the first leg at home. FA Cup fourth round defeat 3-1 away to Stoke.

10/11: 4th in the league (12 points off top). Last 16 in the Champions League, knocked out 4-3 on aggregate by Barcelona, throwing away a first leg lead. FA Cup sixth round defeat, 2-0 away to Manchester United in the game with that midfield (Fabio, Rafael, O'Shea, Gibson). Also the year of the league cup final loss to Birmingham.

11/12: 3rd in the league (19 points off top). Last 16 in the Champions League, knocked out 4-3 on aggregate by Milan after losing the first leg 4-0. FA Cup fifth round defeat, 2-0 away to Sunderland.

12/13: 4th in the league (19 points off top). Last 16 in the Champions League, knocked out on away goals by Bayern after losing 3-1 at home in the first leg. FA Cup fifth round defeat, 1-0 at home to Blackburn.

13/14: 4th in the league (7 points off top). Last 16 in the Champions League, knocked out 3-1 on aggregate by Bayern after losing 2-0 at home in the first leg. FA Cup winners, first trophy in 9 years.

14/15: 3rd in the league (12 points off top). Last 16 in the Champions League, knocked out on away goals by Monaco after losing 3-1 at home in the first leg. FA Cup winners, cracks well and truly papered over.

15/16: 2nd in the league (10 points off top). Last 16 in the Champions League, knocked out 5-1 on aggregate by Barcelona, losing both legs. FA Cup sixth round defeat, 2-1 at home to Watford.

16/17: 5th in the league (18 points off top). Last 16 in the Champions League, knocked out 10-2 on aggregate by Bayern, losing both legs 5-1. FA Cup winners. Paper starting to tear.

The recent flurry of FA Cups aside, they've underperformed across the board every season for 12 or 13 seasons, and look set to do so again. Without some sort of serious overhaul, I can only foresee things getting worse.

Wenger has lost the control and the respect of his dressing room.
Does look that way. The commitment of their players is laughable. I dont blame Sanchez for wanting out but you cant sit on the bench laughing at those out there. I mean it was funny as hell but a team thats together wouldnt have seen that

Imagine going from Adams, Henry, Bergkamp, Viera and Petit to these useless shower of fannies.
But still insisting your team plays as you still had them.

Wenger is so poor tactically and it isn't scruitised enough. He continually plods forwards with the same worn out, failed ideologies that he's stood by for the last decade and it baffles him why his sides aren't competing any more.

Anyone who has watched 5 minutes of a Klopp side knows exactly how his side will set up and play. The last thing you do is leave acres of space behind the back four for Salah and Co to waltz into untrammelled.

I don't understand what Wenger's plan is. He has come out and said that transfer fees will become obsolete and players will all just move on a free when their contract is up. Trouble is he hasn't told any of the other top teams, who continue to improve their squads by spending actual money. And I'm not sure the smaller teams like Southampton are going to give up their main source of income.

All in all, it's like he's totally detached from the reality of modern football.

He will never get sacked. Sadly. He is like Mugabe at Arsenal.

I actually feel sorry for Arsenal now...
Always happy to see our rivals fail, but this time it's a bit different.

This forum doesn't half overreact. Anything other a perfect start to the season is crisis.

Got lucky against Leicester, they should have 0 points right now.

From my analysis after today's game, Sanchez and Ozil are not happy.

Well Sanchez maybe. Ozil's performance was about what I expect from him now. Not quite sure how he gets banded around as a world class player. He basically has a good touch and not much else.

No way I'm responding to all of you :D

Bit devil's advocate, bit just noticing a trend in how we speak about our rivals.

They aren't our rivals though. They were once when it was us two fighting for the title, but those days are over.

But now we should genuinely pity them, well at least I do. Not just for the fact they should be better, not just for the fact those fans are paying ridiculous money to see what we all know is just pure shit, and not even for the fact Arsenal fan tv has now made them a laughing stock just so a few more cnuts can make money off that club and those genuine fans, but for the fact we could easily be them right now.

Thankfully we are not, we have our own problems that have brought new issues of their own, but thank feck we are not Arsenal right now.

Somebody follows Piers on twitter? Should be fun to read.

It's horrible to watch, really. Wenger's as popular with the Arsenal fans as Thatcher was with the miners. Quite sad to see it ending like this but it seems impossible to turn it around. Half the squad want to leave, most of the fans want him to go and HMS Dignified Exit has sailed into the distance.

However this ends it'll be ugly.

absolutely

1. Wenger needed to go in May

2. if Sanchez, Ozil and Ox didn't sign they should have been sold asap

3. start again with someone new

Tuchel would be good for them. I mean, can't get much worse than under Wenger now anyway. Might as well burn down the squad and start over again from scratch.

Are there any Arsenal fans left on here? I seem to remember seeing loads of them not too long ago but they seem to have departed.

Keown was an ape but he fecking good. Then you Lauren as well. Arsenal used to have a perfect blend between animals and players full of flair.

Be interesting to see what petestorey thinks of all this.

Surely the 10 year plan he used to bang on about should be coming to fruition about now?

Calling Arsenal a shambles at the moment is actually quite complimentary, Wenger sent his team out today and they played right into Liverpool's hands, Arsenal barely laid a glove on that suspect back four, only time Arsenal looked close to scoring was when the Liverpool keeper started messing about. Sanchez is wasted in that team.

Growing up I loved watching Arsenal, they were so hard to play against, they seemed to be able to go to war and play great football. It's hard to imagine that Wenger would go from that side to the current Arsenal side.

Now that the magical 4th place wall has been breached, the terror will rain down upon them until a hero rises...wait...what thread am I in again?

I can't recall in world football the last time a once top tier manager, arguably 2nd/3rd best in the world in his pomp, fell off so quickly yet hung on for years due to his pedigree.

The only sports coach/manager I can compare in such fall would be Tom Landry, and he too let the game pass him by due to his stubbornness, lack of change, and drafting terrible players. Ownership finally made the change (well, new ownership did) and the new coach righted the ship within 24 months and by the fourth year they were top of the world (in their sport).

Those sides had leaders on the pitch, multiple leaders. The NBC Sports crew summed it best during post-match - there's no leaders on the pitch and the manager isn't a leader either.

Complete and utter shite from arsenal, watched first half then had a dinner with the family in the other room and kept hearing the crowd go berserk as yet another goal went in!

I was thinking which was worse...the Moyes/van Gaal years or Arsenal's last three years??? It really is a tough one to call. I could almost cry for the Gooners.....almost!

Seriously?

Moyes by far followed by Van Gaal. Atleast Arsenal entertain from time to time.
