"Blackface" Discussion

Yeah, of course, I agree and that's why I would never question why something like blackface is deeply racist. And also why even "positive" things like singing Lukaku has a big penis is wrong. Thing is, people of all ethnicities are prone to having silly hair and it's okay to feck with em because of it, I think

Yes that's true but when it comes to black people and hair it is something that strikes right at the identity. I'm too tired to elaborate further so I will leave it there.

Thanks Penna. I think due to his light skin people think that it's more acceptable to make fun of his hair, but quite frankly it's tiring and pathetic to me.

Yeah, we shouldn't let the fact he isn't black get in the way of people thinking he's black.

I'm only joking, but it's got nothing to do with race, frankly. Everyone has the hair they have and you either do something with it or you don't. He chooses to have it look like that, which is his choice. That's fine, but rightly or wrongly a lot of people will say what they think about it.

Thing is we are on the internet so it's all fun and games, but the info in this thread could potentially stop you from getting into a heated arguement or getting ktfo. I used to think some of this stuff was common sense but apparently not...

Ginger people say hello.

Hi ginger people. Does the colour of your hair cause you to worry about not getting a job or suffer from any other of the various forms of discrimination? Do people touch your hair because they wonder whether it's real or not? Or do you solely have to worry about some idiot coming out with yet another ginger joke because you haven't heard them all before?

At least you don't self-combust in the sunshine, mate!

It's my understanding that Berbers are indigenous Africans. So if you want to say they aren't in any way black, then fine, but I disagree.

So if I see someone dressed up as a toreador for halloween or whatever I should feel offended because of cultural appropriation? Don't make me fecking laugh.

How self entitled can people be nowadays..

Spaniards wouldn't give a shit about something like that. Food, however, makes a lot very precious. Once mentioned to some Valencianos how paella is obviously overrated, a comment that didn't go down too well.

The other day just being an indigenous African wasn't enough to be considered black. I forget which thread it was, but apparently Riyad Mahrez wasn't really black or something.

 Nah, you were right, it's overrated as feck. I'm not a big fan either.

Imagine someone accusing you of cultural appropriation for making one though.. what a world full of precious drama queens we live in. I get the blackface thing and many others but styles of hair and foods now too? Christ.

FFS seriously?!

You haven't read the thread but you ask the same question that's been asked a million times before.

Why do they need black paint?
Firstly, black people’s skin isn’t that of black paint.
Secondly, if you’re wearing the Jordan jersey, shorts and accessories like arm bands then I’m sure people will realise you’re Jordan, it literally has his name on the back.
Finally, why stop at the skin? Why not shave all your hair off too?

Also, dressing up as Jordan for Halloween is up there with terrible Halloween outfits, it’s not on trend or scary at all, you’re just playing dress up, and you’ve decided that being black is a costume akin to that of other ridiculous characters, particularly ones that don't exist.

There’s literally no need to paint your skin. And
:lol:46 pages, 1,854 posts and nearly a year in, we still have confusion over this.
i clearly stated i didn't read the 46 pages and 1854 posts. It was triggered by the young girl (under10 i think) that dressed as mo salah and painted herself black

That's another thing about them - they get really into it sometimes and start saying things like, "no no, that's not the real stuff." Ah, okay, tastes like shite in Aragon and other surrounding regions, but suddenly becomes the shit when you cross over into the Community of Valencia.

Defining who is and isn't black isn't an easy discussion for me so I will leave it there. I had no input in any discussion about Mahrez. I just came to say my piece about Fellaini and his hair and whether he is black, white or neither my point still stands :)

I agree.I already learned about the blackface but the other things seem too much.
A whole night of Carnaval and some people would have a heart attack

Gingers have no soul. South Park said so. You just proved my point about subjective humour and context. Poking fun at someone's hair doesn't automatically mean you are being racist. It depends on the joke, context and delivery and also intent.

Hell yeah. Shaving my head would be the first step for a Jordan costume. Then I'd punch Steve Kerr in the mouth and tell Chamillionaire to feck off. You've got to be authentic.

Exactly. If I was going as Beyonce I would just curl my hair and learn to sing out of tune over everyone else and dance like I was on acid with broken knees.

It's always worth saying in these threads that race is a social construction, it's something we've made up to put people in categories.

"how do you wash it?" "do you comb it?" "how do you straighten it?" "how does it look when it's wet" "is it real?"

I don't wanna derail the thread with too much focus on black hair, but yes even positive acknowledgement isn't helpful.
It's kinda like the idea that making a song about Lukaku having a big penis isn't racist because it's a positive attribute that any guy would want.
Thinking black people have cool hair only highlights the idea that our hair is 'other' and as such warrants particular attention, which is why I said positive intent doesn't mean it's not racist.

Sure in the beginning the attention is fine - and in somewhere like Asia where they hardly ever see a black person even in media you can understand the shock and curiosity, but as a black person you begin to realise that your hair is on notice at all times, your hair can be the reason why someone thinks of you in one way or not - which can impact whether or not you get a job, or someone thinks you're smart, or likely to rob them, or poor etc.
You're then raised with the idea (particularly if you're a black woman) that your hair must be neat/tidy (read: approving of white beauty standards aka straight/tied up/short) in order not to make you look bad. Which then has the psychological effect of disliking your own natural hair, or thinking that other race's hair is superior to yours.

Like I said it's a really big topic, and there's so much to unpack because it's all tied in to much bigger subjects like white supremacy and racism.

But it's thirsty thursdays and I have a bottle of rosé with my name on it.
Go on get your drink on gurl

This is the most offensive thing anyone has said in this thread.

I'm laughing because as someone who's been in a choir since 10, played the piano since 5 and been into music all my life, when I tell people that Beyonce isn't a good singer they gasp. There are women in our choir with 10 times the voice than Beyonce. I've also tried telling people that Mariah Carey back in the 90's was probably one of the best vocalists on the planet.

The vocal histrionics you get in female led pop music does my nut in. Ariana Grande and Beyonce are two of the worst culprits for this. Like it's some sort of competition to get as much vibrato on every note as possible.

I highly doubt your voice is the defining factor in your singing career.looks and marketability are far more important. If you lookat MTV you'd think only good looking people can sing. Fecking nonsense.

Exactly. Marketing especially when it comes to the likes of Ariana Grande, Selena Gomez, Miley Cyrus etc. They’re former Disney stars already known to millions of kids around the globe. Why not get a few writers to come up with some songs for them and you’ve got a guaranteed audience ready to lap it up. It’s one long production line.

Watching “Holiday Inn” atm.
From 1942, with Bing Crosby and Fred Astaire. The blackface number in that film was truly cringeworthy.
They even discussed doing it again for the St Valentine’s Day routine

How times have changed, mostly.

I sing in a reasonably good church choir in the suburbs of Chicago and there are many talented women in my choir as well, so I will just say this. Beyonce is a great singer. You are over exaggerating it to the point of madness. There are surely better talented women than Beyonce but to say that she's nothing is ridiculous.

Mariah Carey and a young Whitney Houston are great vocalists no doubt.

This thread is a mine field so I'm going to throw another grenade into it...

If there was a white person inside Maui's costume would that be deemed racist? The costume itself is pretty caricatured, in the movie itself too. Just waiting to hear some views on this, would a full costume and not just black facing be equally racist?

Just to clarify, anyone who doesn't think that black facing is racist has to have lived in a cave most of their lives.

Are they dressing up as a character from the movie, or are they dressing up as Maui generally?

Everything about Maui culture is hugely significant, therefore slapping on fake tattoo's, and wearing their cultural dress for the purpose of it being a costume would be offensive.
Now obviously if you are appreciating the culture as part of a ceremony or something then that's cultural appreciation - which is always welcome, and in that situation actual Maui's would embrace you and provide you with the correct attire.

In the case of this, because there's a movie - if you dress up as a character, that particular character is fictional so wearing a character's costume isn't offensive, unless the character itself is offensive to begin with. As far as I know, the costume designers spent a lot of time researching Maui culture while they were making the movie in order to represent it correctly.

So dress up as a character from Moana, absolutely, it's obviously never okay to blacken your face.
Don't just take Maui culture as if it's a costume.

I wouldn't say it's racist, unless your intention is done to mock & degrade the culture.
Cultural appropriation would be a better term for it.

The person inside the suit is working at what i assume is one of the Disney resorts yes?

A Dutch "politician" Sylvana Simons, called for a boycott on black friday, citing it was originally a day on which slave owners could buy slaves at a discount.

This turned out to be false and is yet another reason why I put the " " around the word politician when describing Sylvana Simons.

Also: why is this thread still a discussion. Blackface is wrong, if you don't see that now, you won't see it ever and you're honestly a bit daft.
