Danny Welbeck

I think it's more to do with how much and how quickly he's improved following first team exposure. He's showed the right mentality to make it at this club, he got his chance and he took it. His link up play, his touch and his dribbling even all came on significantly following that first goal, you could see him genuinely improving game by game for the first team.

Everyone knows he's not as naturally gifted as Welbeck but you don't have to be that gifted to be a player for us, you just need to know how to play your role and have the confidence to show it. He's doing that.

Umm, I think you'll find at least a good 50% of people on here would disagree. I agree with you though, I think its madness to think Macheda is more gifted than Welbeck, but thats the caf for you. Danny has natural talent that cannot be learnt, its simply something he was born with.

In regards to the first bit of your post, I havent seen too much improvement in Macheda if i'm honest - although he hasnt played much, but if anything the level of his overall performances have stayed the same - but at least he hasnt gone backwards. However, I dont think this is a concern, because he's young and inconsisency is inevitable, but when I look at Welbeck I see everything in him improving. He's had some wonderful performances, the ones that stick out are in the CC against Wolves and FA Cup against Burnley (I think? He managed to execute an Henry-esque first touch and shot within the first 10 minutes). Also, his first touch and dribbling is improving as well his awareness. All the signs are good.

Spurs in FA Cup, 08/09 we won 2-1
Small clip, there's a better one of his overall contribution somewhere

That sums up what I like about Welbeck, he's individually talented on the ball, but also like looking for the one-two's rather than always trying to beat his man and mixes it up. The goal against Wolves was a perfect example, it shows a good football brain in addition to the natural talent.

I've said it in another thread but i'll say it here too

Danny should stay with us up till xmas just like last year. He'll play all the CC and any CL dead rubbers. He'll also be in contention for minutes in Prem games that we have wrapped up, though that will conceivably be more Owen & Chicos role. This arrangement i feel would be more beneficial to all involved as it will give him game time with those he'll be in contention with and he'll train everyday with world class players. After Xmas if the right move is on i wouldn't mind seeing him going out on loan then.

Danny is for me, along with Rafael our brightest young prospect, he oozes composure which is something very few players have at such a young age, and can sometimes be the only difference between a player taking his first team oportunity and one who falls by the wayside.

I dislike it when players go on loan because for me it's better they're around the club knocking on the first team door. I can't forget when Rossi went to Newcastle for experience and we never saw him again despite his obvious talent. He had a bad spell at a bad set up and he seemed to be forgetten, despite him taking his chances when provided with them at Old Trafford.

yeah thats what i mean by the right move.

PNE with Fergie jr at the helm looks like a good set up. Danny was doing well there before his injury and haven't they already taken James again for next season?
I can see that being a good link to maintain for the club in future

Would anyone call it inaccurate to say that Welbeck has made more of an impact than any youth team striker since Sparky and Robins? We've had so many bright hopes who've done absolutely nothing in the first team, Campbell, Ebanks-Blake, Healy, Webber and all the rest only ever managed a handful of appearances and at best a goal. Rossi scored a few, but didn't play nearly as much as Danny has, before he decided to leave.

I think he's not only made more of an impact than any youth team striker in years, I think he's got more talent.

It's tough at United - we know that some of our biggest stars (homegrown and bought in) were first team regulars in their teens and that's a big burden to put on a new kid who isn't ready so early. Welbeck looks like he's still growing into his body, it makes him look awkward at times, but he's close now. So close I'd be sad to see him go out on loan.

I am biassed of course. It'd be great to see a Manchester lad come through.

I think what also works in his favour for making the first team here one day is that should we be fully stocked with central striking options, we could decide to focus on making him a wide forward/winger.

He looks to have the techincal ability to adapt to both roles with equal success.

Promising Manchester United striker Danny Welbeck accepts he is likely to go out on loan to a Barclays Premier League club in the coming season.

Manager Sir Alex Ferguson says both Welbeck and midfielder Tom Cleverley have good futures but need regular football at another top-flight team.

Sunderland have already expressed an interest in Welbeck, who had a spell on loan at Preston last season before suffering a knee injury, which needed an operation.

He has made a bright start to United's five-match summer tour which takes in Canada, the United States and Mexico.

The 19-year-old Manchester-born forward scored in the victory against Celtic in Toronto last week and followed that display by setting up Gabriel Obertan for the winner in midweek when Philadelphia Union were beaten.

Welbeck insists he is content to go along with any short-term career plans Ferguson may have for him.

Welbeck said: "My main aim is to be part of the first team set-up but I am happy to go on loan if the manager wants me to. I just want to keep playing games and improving.

"I feel I have improved a lot over the last couple of years in particular. I have learned so much during that time particularly the importance of mental strength on and off the pitch. I just want to keep improving and striving to show everyone what I can do.

"I am really pleased with how the tour has gone for me so far and I am happy with my performances. I have got to keep going and continue to get my fitness up."

Welbeck says it is a "privilege" to be around senior outfield players like Ryan Giggs, Paul Scholes and Dimitar Berbatov on tour.

The squad are due to leave Philadelphia for Kansas on Saturday to prepare for the match against the Wizards on Sunday.

Welbeck added: "It is always good to be away with a few of the older lads because you pick up so much from them every day.

"You see how they prepare for games, how they rest and how they train. They are unbelievable - they have this huge determination to win every single training match, let alone actual games. Just to be around them is a real privilege."

Even though the Wizards have struggled for consistency in the MLS Eastern Conference they are expecting a bumper crowd at the Arrowhead Stadium with ticket sales still climbing after hitting the 40,000 mark last month.

President Robb Heineman said: "This is one of a series of events here which are staking claim that Kansas City truly is a soccer town.

"The things we are trying to do here are not small minded in nature. I am hopeful we are going to have the largest crowd on the tour. This match speaks volumes for the momentum we have in Kansas City."

United then face an MLS All-Stars XI in Houston before ending the tour in Guadalajara against Chivas after signing striker Javier Hernandez.

Sometimes I think he dithers too long on the ball and lacks speed of thought so he misses chances to shoot or pass, but then other times I think he shows remarkable composure by making a decision before passing or shooting.

As he gets older his decision-making will become faster, and his composure will be all the more valuable.

It's amazing to hear from SAF that he is still going through a growth spurt. He's now the same height as Emile Heskey, and he has a great burst of pace. By 21 or 22 his frame should have filled out, and he'll be an imposing centre forward.

I seem to remember that they predicted that he would end up about 6ft 3" in the end. If he can maintain his pace and technique on the ball as he fills out he could be some prospect to face.

All I'm saying is that he's over his injury. He'll have chances at United because he's no longer at Preston and probably won't be going on loan again.

So what's black got to do with any of that?

If you back track any more you'll be moonwalking.

Welbeck is having a good US tour so far. It will be interesting to see where we are in terms of strikers come the new season because we have Hernandez to come in and Owen to come back to complement Rooney and Berbatov.
That leaves Diouf, Macheda and Welbeck needing to impress.
Of the three I see one of them staying as back-up, one sold and one loaned out into the long grass.

I can't see any of the 3 being sold. Diouf has only been with us for 6 months and Fergie keeps speaking highly of Welbeck and Macheda.

Once again he looked very bright and far outshone Macheda, with whom he will undoubtedly be compared.

Hopefully he can keep it up.

He really looks like he wants to stay and fight for a place rather than go on loan. He's been playing very well and good to see him upfront rather than on the wing.

The short spell in the championship seems to have done him the world of good. the boy is becoming a beast. looks dangerous cutting in on both left and the right.

I think he only played 4 or 5 games. I doubt it made much difference.

I think Welbeck should go on loan to Blackpool considering their main striker Clark is out for the season and some other striker called Almond is out for about 3-4 months with a dislocated shoulder.. He would walk into the team and would be playing on a higher level than the Championship.. Although most on here seem to think he needs to go to the Championship alone to build on the physical side of his game.. I wouldn't see why the PL wouldn't be good enough physically i.e.. At the end of the day he needs 1st team regular football & Blackpool can provide that.. Although there would be one major stumbling block for this move.. What kind of football do Blackpool play?
