Douglas Costa

Our transfer policy has indeed become much more professional. The legendary story of Mandzukic's signing would probably not repeat itself nowadays.

For all of Sammer's strengths though, transfer activities are not his forte. Imo Guardiola and especially Leverkusen's former transfer guru Michael Reschke are the driving forces behind transfers like Costa and Coman. Sammer signs his occasional German pet project ( Weiser, Kirchoff, Rode and Kurt) that are rather inconsequential for our success. Then there's still what I'd call the 'executive transfers' in the mold of Götze and Lewandowski.

Don't know about best in the world but the people in charge are doing a good job.

it goes both ways so. Lewa and Müller score so many goals, because Costa is running wreaks havoc on the wings. Despite Lewa and Müller scoring left, right and center, he is our best player this season.

It's bascially the same with Costa and Ribery. Not really a big goalscoring type of player, but the one who is the most important for the team going forward and creating. Those type of players usually don't get the credit they deserve, though.

But however, seeing his Robben-esque goal on tuesday, there might be hope. :p

Well if you look at our squad, and what we usually pay for our players compared to other topclubs (note: Martinez is still our record transfer with 40 million...€uro), it surely has to be the best in the world? At least among the topclubs.

Even clubs like Liverpool usually pay higher than we are.

Ribery had a pretty good goalscoring record for a playmaking winger, about 1 in 3. And he scored quite a few important ones. Douglas Costa is nowhere near that right now.

Net-spent without salaries is a useless stat in my opinion. Götze, Vidal and Costa may have cost only between 30 and 40 million in transfer fees each, but especially the first two are earning much more than money than Liverpool's big signings like Firmino or Beneteke. It's always about the volume of each transfer and Bayern is spending a lot of money.

The perception of English clubs is different though. Between the crazy TV deals and general financial health of the PL (15 or so teams in the top 20 richest teams table are from the PL) - English clubs get quoted much higher prices for players.

Bayern Munich seem to have great scouts, always seem to pick up the right players who fit their system almost instantly. Would have been a feckin great signing for us :(

He can come to us and take Pep with him

Didn't have the best of games against Eintracht Frankfurt, but he's been great for Bayern so far. You have to wonder how on Earth he stayed at Shakhtar for so long.

Since we have a system and it is about getting the players matching for that they are pretty successful. It probably is more difficult to buy players and then try to accomodate them...

Recently we haven't done that badly in that regard, which gives me hope for the future.

You need to be a goalscorer for that. Costa's big advantage at Bayern is that there are alreadythis two guys with the two pointed guns waiting that just needed more munition....

If he just would beat his man without end product it would not be the same...
As much a goal scorer as Iniesta or Ribery were when they were finalists.

This guy is amazing.

Serious lack of end product in the two games against Arsenal though, would drive us nutts like Memphis does

He travelled to the Brazilian NT in stellar form and returned with an untreated foot injury. He was not his usual self at the Emirates and is now slowly returning to the level he showed prior to the international games.

Don't even compare him to Memphis. This guy can beat a man from any postion. The guy is like a torpedo. His pace over a short distance is amazing. Full backs can't push up with this guy on the pitch.

He's excellent, isn't he? Haven't seen a player who possesses so much natural skill for ages. He's awesome to watch. A player we could really do with.

Still difficult to understand why he stayed that long in Ukraine. The talent always was obvious.

Ya it was close at one stage if I recall correctly, can't remember the exact details but didn't we kind of turn him down.
I think we wanted him when he left Gremio, but realised he would struggle to get a work permit.

There was an article last year that he was a back up option to Di Maria. :(

Let's also not forget that he has 4 years on Memphis.

Costa has been in great form thus far and his speed off the mark is just frightening. Looks like a great signing for Bayern.

He is a much more intelligent player than Memphis.
Definitely. But then again, who isn't.

Costa is such an entertaining player to watch. And why did he stay at Ukraine for so long remains a mystery.

From what I read he wasn't performing that good for Shakthar and even Lucescu believed he would need some time to reach the level of Ribery and Robben. His talent was always known which is why big clubs like Chelsea, United, Bayern & Co showed interest in the first place. In the end Shakthar players are no cheap commodities and it took Pep Guardiola's first-hand observations and the knowledge of our South-America scouting guru Michael Reschke to make the transfer a reality.

Just look at the outrage when we signed Costa who was called 'that overprized nobody from Ukraine' by some Bayern fans who were thirsting for a big money transfer just for the sake of making a statement. In the end we were rewarded for our courage. Other clubs were not willling to take that chance which is probably why Costa stayed so long in Ukraine.
