Gareth Bale is...The most expensive player ever?!

What makes you think Ronaldo would be interested?

Also, Ronaldo would probably demand double the wages.

Bale is quality. If we can afford it then I don't care what the cost is.

I'd pay 50m

He's the right age to develop further and is champing at the bit to become one of te best. The likes of Madrid wouldn't hesitate to pay 50 so if we want him, we shouldn't hesitate either. Make a lot of it back anyway

Eh? What makes you think Ronaldo would be interested? Think it's pretty much clear as day he would be and misses the club to a degree.

Understand the point you're making but the opening question is a bit silly.

I take it there's a typo in there TR? Otherwise you're just agreeing yet disagreeing at the same time?

I'm just asking that poster why he seems so certain Ronaldo was be so keen to come back? I've seen nothing to suggest that.

No typos!

I don't think anyone is certain but we have seen enough from him to know he would be at least interested.

Spurs well and truly blowing their top 4 hopes at the moment. If they dont finish top 4 and they receive offers of around £50m I can't see them rejecting.

I think its as clear as day that Ronnie would never dream of coming back here. Obviously he is trying to get a 300,000 quid per week contract from Madrid and until he gets it we are going to keep hearing about how he loves Utd and could well come back someday. It's simple...If Madrid don't cough up his 300,000/350,000 Euros a week salary then PSG will only be too happy to pay him that. Theres no way we would be paying anything close to that for him each week. Bale would probably be more than happy to accept 160,000/180,000 quid a week to play for us with a view to being paid in live with Van Persie if he can score a certain amount for us in his first season! Spuds won't sell him if they make the Champions League though...And he wont come cheap

Why do people say things like "We shouldn't go above £50m"?

For all we know, United can afford that easily. What does it matter?! I don't care if we spend £100m on him, so long as we have it to spare.

  • Because showing that you're willing to spend way over the top to get talent means that in the future other clubs are more likely to give stupid demands for their players.
  • Because spending £100m of "transfer budget" means there's less available to buy other players. We're obviously a rich club, but we're not City and our funds are finite.
  • Because by paying over the top we can't pisstake Liverpool. And by spunking £100m on one player we can't pisstake City.

Exactly.

Because that's not good business and better deals could be made elsewhere rather than overpaying no matter if you have 5m or 500m in the bank. Id like Bale but by your logic if he was to cost 100m id rather buy 3 players of equal quality for that.

£100m on Bale?!? That's mental! If we did that David Gill would do whatever he could to get his CEO position back. Bale's a good player but he aint worth more than £35m for me.

Buying a player thats obviously not worth £50 or 60 million, for that amount of money, puts ridiculous pressure on a player. There have been many examples of players bought for too much money who the price tag looms over and they arent able to perform their best.

Not entirely sure what Bale is worth, but its obviously a terrible idea to pay a lot more than hes worth

Wouldn't pay 50m for him at all, especially when someone like Isco has a buyout clause of less than 30m

Premier League - Paper Round: A cock and Bale story?
The rapidly disintegrating spectacle of the title 'race' looks more like a lone runner sauntering to victory while his rivals trip over their shoelaces - leaving the Sunday papers floundering for something to write about this morning.
Eurosport – 20 hours ago

While the 'quality' press goes big on Wales's Six Nations monstering of England, the Daily Star Sunday returns to what it does best - the flimsy transfer rumour.

Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy has, the Star reports, placed a £70m price tag on Gareth Bale following an enquiry from Manchester United.

The story sadly lacks quotes or any real evidence, and is based on the following assertion: "The Daily Star Sunday has been told that United made a top-level inquiry for Bale ... But Tottenham’s valuation has discouraged United from pursuing their understandable interest in the Wales superstar."

By whom? Sir Alex Ferguson? Bale? The Old Trafford tea lady? Nayim? We are left to guess.

Or are we?

The Star's sister paper, the Daily Express, carried a similar story on Friday - again featuring a Manchester United enquiry, and again with the £70m price tag.

However, the Express cites Goal.com as its source - to be precise this story, published on Thursday, featuring all the details included in the Star's report, such as a possible £150,000-a-week contract from Spurs.

Has a national newspaper published a back page lead based on a three-day-old story from a website?

It's not for Paper Round to say, but added to the furore over The Times's Dream Football League 'exclusive' it has been a pretty tough week for newspaper journalism.

Elsewhere in the world of football rumours, the papers come up with these, to be taken with the requisite ladleful of salt.

It's generally accepted that when Brazil star Neymar comes to Europe from Santos, he will join Barcelona. But the Mail on Sunday claims Manchester City will try to gazump the Catalans with a bid exceeding the £50m being offered by Barca.

Today's Falcao story comes in the Sunday People, which claims Manchester City are set to break the British transfer record with a £52m bid for the Atletico Madrid striker.

And a final Manchester City story - Samir Nasri could be on his way out at the end of the season, with Paris Saint-Germain pursuing their interest in the Frenchman. The Sun claims PSG have already spoken to the player's father.

Brazilian midfielder Anderson is set to leave Manchester United in the summer, while Nani, Alexander Buttner and Anders Lindegaard's respective futures also hang in the balance. (Sunday Mirror)

I wouldn't even go past 30 million for Bale. If we want to spend 50 million on him, I'd rather use that to get Ronaldo (with abit of top-up).

WTF? £30m for Bale is laughably low.

Think of his age and talented, and how much he has already proven himself and he is easily worth £50m.

What makes you think Ronaldo would be interested?

I would think Ronnie would want closer to treble - easily upwards of £300k pw.

Because 100M easilly get you Ronaldo + 3 other players.

Doh!

Bale's good, but not 100M good

What makes you think Ronaldo, a player sold "at a steal" according to SAF for £80m who has also improved greatly (again, according to SAF) and is still youngish is going to cost less than he did before!?

I'll never stop. For every game where he contributes nothing but speculative efforts from distance I'll be here to remind everyone of it! Of course every time he nets against Wigan and Southampton the rest will be here to add another £10m onto his price tag

Because he's 28.

The reason he cost so much beforehand was because he was only 24, and had huge upside potential, as well as great sell-on value.

He doesn't at 28.

Successful won't like that.

No one is worth 50 million or more except Ronaldo and Messi. Just because torres and carroll went for an inflated price doesn't mean that everyone's worth has suddenly doubled or tripled based on that.

Kaká went for over £50m too in fairness.

I think Bale has to do what he is currently doing, for another season or two at least, to be justifying a £50m price tag.

When you think of the Ronaldo scenario, he was performing as well as Bale, better in fact, for about 3 years before silly sums were being touted for him.

Based on what Bale is doing now, I don't see why he can't reach a similar level but he needs to do it consistently, for more than one season, imo.

He'll never reach a similar level. Technically Ronaldo is streets ahead and Bale has scored goals over a short span of time. He'll be more round the level of the liked of Gerrard.

How about £1 Billion. You know...as long as we have it to spare and all....

I can't see Bale moving anywhere other than Spain. He'd be the ideal new Galactico for Perez and would at least partially offset the possibility of Ronaldo leaving.

Would he? Real like players with technique and flair. I would think that bale would be behind the liked of Neymar, gotze and Wilshere in the lit of players they want.

Goal and assist yesterday. It's simply becoming the norm now. What a player.
