Guillermo Varela

Hasn't been mentioned much but rumours Varela is off to Madrid on loan with an option to buy for €5m.

Tuttomercatoweb reported on Friday Zidane wants him for the B team.

I don't think he was ever going to make the grain anyway, so not too bothered.

Bit annoyed by this as he looks a very tidy player. But you can't really grumble if it's a sweetner for Di Maria.
60m quid was sweetener enough.

I haven't watch too much of Varela in the reserves, but by all accounts from others, I thought we'd at least have seen him as backup in our squad this season. :(

We paid enough and overpaid for Di Maria already to not require such sweetners. This will be a seperate deal if this does happen and would mean he wasn't rated at the club strangely.

So far nobody has backed it up though but he was missing from the U21 game. Thought he would have been chance to feature today otherwise.

sweetener? Did they really need one on top of 60m + add one?

I thought he'd make the step up to backup RB. He looked very good for the u21's tbh. Always seemed to be a stand out player.

We'd be fools to let him go without giving him a chance. Very talented player.

Could just be that a young South American wants to be in Madrid rather than Manchester?
Also €5? Thats just a tiny bit less than we received for Berbatov. That's a metaphorical goldmine in terms of transfer fees received for us.

His agent was trying to engineer a move to Italy a bit ago for him, I'd imagine this is more agent driven stuff than any genuine Madrid interest considering it originated in Italian press.

Have read both Valera and Vermijl being linked away from the club. Other than Janko, that would mean no other RB at the club except rafa then.

I wouldn't like this much. We could do with a new option at RB/RWB and Varela has consistently impressed at the lower levels. Would be very disappointing if he left the club without being given a chance for the first team.

Im pissed at this. I don't care if it was a so called sweetener for the DI Maria deal. We paid them 60M FFS. This kid has a lot of potential. I rate him higher than Rafael at the same age. Was expecting him to make the jump. Im certain if LVG watched actually watched him play, he wouldn't be letting him go considering we have a sicknote of a first choice RB.

There's no way we should be getting rid of this kid. He's a much, much better player than Janko, and I'd have expected him to make a few first team appearances by the end of this season.

Rafael at the same age had about 60 games in the first team under his belt including that amazing run of form in the first half of the 2011 season.

Im tired of Rafael and his fitness record. We need someone else to take up the mantle

Really? I thought Janko was one of our best u21 players and he is a couple years younger. I like Varela but I think Janko has more of a future at the club.

I know this, but he's wasn't a refined defender, was still a liability with his rash tackles and still is. From what i've seen of Varela he looks more disciplined at the back and his positioning and awareness has impressed me. I wanted for him to get a chance in the first team as backup. I repeat this, if LVG watched him play he wouldn't sanction this loan (essentially the way its been proposed its not even a regular loan if RM have the option to buy at a set price after 12 months, its basically a give away).

Not even close...Wilson,Pearson,Thorpe,... all better than him last season and so far this season.

He won the Denzel Haroun award but wasn't really deserving of it, in my opinion.

Ekangamene, James, Wilson all definitely had better years than him, and Rothwell and Pearson are better players than him (albeit completely different positions.)

In terms of the right back spot, personally I think Varela is clearly better. Janko lacks positional sense, and isn't as good technically, it's just his immense stature that dominates at this age but I don't think it will in the senior team.

Varela seems to be the carbon copy of Rafael; technically very sound, makes pacy runs overlappping the winger, is extremely good in he build up play and plays with immense passion and flair. If he hadn't have had such a disturbed season I think he may have been knocking on the first team door in Giggsy's games in charge.

I respect your right to your own opinion, but I don't agree entirely with it.

Perhaps he wants to leave. Lets face it I think he would've expected to play for our first team by now.

I hoped he would challenge Rafael for a first team spot this season.

He has potential to be better than Rafael. Sometimes I don't see the point of signing young players only to get rid of them so quickly. I hope the story is fake

The game I watched him in this season (playing CB I believe) he was much more impressive than last. Still, for 5m euros you can't say it's a bad deal for a guy who's never managed a first team game for us.

I think Rafael still has the potential to get better than his 2012/13 peak. I do see a lot of potential in Varela but I don't know exactly how much. He steadily improved over the course of last season though to the point where I could see him being integrated into the first team this season. It'll be a shame if he goes without us giving him a real go.

much more talent in this kid than Janko who is more Valencia. I also believed not long time ago he could be better than Rafael. Not just he looked injury-free player but his ability on the ball was simply better than Rafaels at that time 20/21 yo.. Defensively looked sharp as well but very similar to Rafa anyway. As some people said before it would not be wise let him go before we give him chance, tonight it could be a perfect match for him but still think that he could get a chance on tour..

After what he apparently said after not being selected to go on tour, I'm not surprised he is being let go (unless those comments were untrue)

EDIT: That was Vermijl as has been pointed out.

The Italy thing was a loan deal, wasn't it? I can understand his wanting to leave (if true) when he gets overlooked for Lingard and Janko at RWB. I love Lingard and Janko's pace and strength are very interesting raw ingredients, but at the moment I'm convinced Varela is a better option for that position, even though he's probably better in a back four. Really hope we don't lose him.

Was a loan with a view to making it permanent.

Good he hasn't left. Was a odd rumor to begin with.

Hope he gets a chance as backup to either wingback tbh instead of Young/Valencia soon.

he wont get a chance just because we buy some falcao at his position dont worry guys:-) and yeah there is still young and valencia over him..
