Players from Racing Santander refused to play in Thursday evening’s Copa Del Rey clash with Real Sociedad after failing to be paid for a number of months.
Earlier in the day the playing staff released a statement insisting they would boycott the match unless president Angel Lavin (pictured above) and his board stepped down immediately.

“If at 2100 (CET) the Racing board is the same as now, they will not play,” said Association of Spanish Footballers (AFE) chief Luis Rubiales.

“The squad decided something last Monday which they made public, and they continue thinking exactly the same, that if the current board has not resigned by the time of the game they are not going to play. They have the complete backing of the AFE, as always.”

After completing the warm-up the players – along with the club’s coaching staff – stood arm in arm and refused to get involved as Lavin and his board had not stepped down.

Sociedad passed the ball amongst themselves before kicking it out for a throw-in. At that point the referee suspended the game.

Racing Santander have suffered two consecutive relegations and are current languishing in the third tier of Spanish football.

Some big games kicking around there.

Barcelona - Valencia would normally be a good watch (though I won't be watching live for obvious reasons). However Valencia have are currently tenth and have changed half the squad since June - including Soldado in summer, Canales and Banega this month. They changed manager at Christmas and they're still waiting for new financing, though they hope that's getting closer.

Atletico Vs Real Sociedad is an interesting one. Real are capable of losing by 4 or 5 goals, but are equally capable of good performances and making their opponents work to get anything (1-0 and 0-0 against us in the CL). Which one will turn up?

However the standout match has to be Athletic - Real Madrid. That's fourth Vs third. Madrid have found a much better rhythm in recent weeks, but Athletic is always a tough crowd and the Athletic team have also settled into a good run of form. At any rate, it could be a very good game.

2-2 Messi penalty for a handball that looked more like it hit the shoulder.

And 2-3. Great match by Valencia.

And Messi misses a great chance. Everything going for Valencia now...

Aaaaaannnd Full-time. Excellent performance by Valencia. I usually don't like La Liga but that was a great match.

For the very first time in his famous career so far, Lionel Messi has lost a game at the Nou Camp in which he has scored. 107 games: 99 wins, 7 draws and a single loss (today).

Kind of reminds me of how Scolari's season at Chelsea went. They started really well, people talked about how the manager is making them better (there were similar talk about Martino playing a little differently), but after the early effect is gone, the team is suddenly in trouble and is struggling.

I didn't see the Barca-Valencia game just the highlights show last night. That was a big win for Valencia, it could boost their confidence a lot. However they're 14 points behind Athletic who play tonight so 4th is probably already out of reach. I think they'll be relieved to get a Europa place now.

It's Barca's first defeat in La Liga at home in nearly 2 years, the last one was against Real Madrid. So how did it happen, it looked as if they had the game under control in the first half and were coasting to another win. Then came that 44th minute equaliser from Valencia and it all went downhill. 2-1 down and the ref gave them a (wrongly awarded) penalty, because all refs are Madrid fans.

3-2 down and the crowd grew restless and Barca looked steadily more hesitant. They still had chances to save it, most obviously with Messi late on, but the second half really belonged to Valencia. Dani Alves complained about the crowd after the match and made a comment about how Barca could have scored more - maybe his comments about the defenders were edited out.

Traditionally when the leading team lose points one day, the following teams do the same the next day. Atletico have been grinding out results this season, an amazing thing to say about a team that's been bizarrely inconsistent for a couple of decades, so maybe they can break that tradition too, though Real Sociedad aren't a bad team either. Real Madrid have a tough away at Athletic, normally you'd say a draw there for them would be a good result, but not this year.

Should be an interesting day in La Liga. Therefore both games will probably be crap :D

 I love you jojo.

Griezman will score the winner for Sociedad tonight and then a brace from Ron and one from Bale will secure us top of the table in a 0-3 away win, watch this space.

Could be tricky to get that one from Bale, he's injured and didn't travel to Bilbao.

Bilbao at home are not an easy team to beat at all. I'll be watching this one.

See you're sticking to the facts, as you see them of course. Well played.

Not a shocking defeat, you could see there have been cracks in the way the team has been playing for some time, especially since the winter break. However, it was definitely one of the worst performances I've seen from the team in several years...at home, no less. Credit to Los Che, they never gave up and continued to wait for their chances and took them well enough. Feghouli was MOTM, for me, but strong performances across the squad.

Don't think I've seen more misplaced passes, turnovers and lack of precision/intensity in one match in a lonnng time - even Leo looked to be going through the motions for long stretches of the match. Something is not quite right in the squad, Tata has big issues to resolve

Jesus, and they say us Real fans are spoiled? You lost 2 games in 22, hardly a disastrous season so far...

No, RM fans can't possibly be spoiled with the most expensive squads ever put together. Not prone to exaggerations either equating 'big issues to resolve' to disastrous.

At least we don't sound like we're going to have a panic attack at the first glimpse of losing that first spot, right?

You're usually posting on here with your pants around your ankles when talking about "Leo" and co but all of a sudden your team is having major issues? Give me a break.

Do I need to remind you that you are still leaders? If you have issues I don't want to think what the rest of the league has.

Creative imagination, I suppose that comes in handy when spinning for a club like yours.

Dialing it down from disastrous to major, eventually you'll find your way back to reality and what I actually posted

Christ, I thought this place was bad in terms of complaining.

One freak loss, one - and it's massive issues in the squad? Give me a fecking break!

Barca fans.

Last time Barca had a bad result, FCBarca posted something similar about Tata and something not being right.

Courtois, Juanfran, Miranda, Godín, Insua, Gabi, Mario, Koke, Sosa, Diego Costa y Villa.

Vs

Bravo, Carlos Martínez, Ansotegi, Iñigo Martínez, José Ángel, Gaztañaga, Rubén Pardo, Zurutuza, Xabi Prieto, Griezmann y Vela

Not surprisingly the pre-match stadium is all about tributes to Aragones. Once the game kicks off of course, it will be all about whether Atletico can go clear at the top of La Liga.

On paper, looking at those line-ups this should be very entertaining... in reality I'm expecting cagey. I hope I'm wrong.

1-0 Atletico. Would be great if they could somehow win the league but they'll inevitably slip away unfortunately.
