Liverpool

There's more to how good a football player is than how he's playing at his current team right now.

Paulinho is brilliant for Brazil for example but has been crap for Spurs, that doesn't mean he's a bad player.

What you are basically saying is you would rather have a squad that looks good on paper than one who looks mediocre on paper but players better together. :wenger:

Because with a good manager that isn't either a charlatan like AVB or a complete Ihni binni dimi diniwiny anitaime like Tim Sherwood Paulinho is a much better player than Jordan Henderson. He is way beyond his level.

A bit like how United don't have the 7th best side in the league we just have a terrible manager, when we had a real manager last season we won the damn thing with virtually the exact same team. Or are all our player mediocre now when they were great just four months before Moyes started the season?

Squads, systems, tactics all that stuff is put together by the manager. They effect how well the player performs in the context of his current side but they don't affect a players individual quality outside of his current team (not in the short term sense).

Riquleme for example when he went to Barcelona was played on the wing and generally was rubbish, then he went to Villarreal and was immediately one of the best players in the world. He didn't just suddenly become way better at football because he moved 30 miles down the Spanish coast. He had a manager who got the best out of his talents.

With a good manager I think the Arsenal, Chelsea and Spurs midfield threes all have a higher ceiling than the Liverpool midfield three's but right now only the Chelsea midfield is actually being used in a way where they can show it (although imo if they were fit Ozil, Ramsey, Flamini) would play better than any Liverpool midfield three too, they're just always injured between them.

If Aguero isn't fully firing then City can easily lose there. Liverpool just overwhelm teams at home and the opponents usually shit their pants at the sight of Suarez. Chelsea might win there, they might lose 4-0. They are unpredictable right now. City simply must not lose next week.

Chelsea won't lose 4-0 at Anfield, I can guarantee that. I'd be surprised if Mourinho doesn't come away with a 0-0 or a 1-1. City's game is much more in the balance but while you can say we can't lose, the same applies to Liverpool. But, we have the benefit of a draw being a better result for us than Liverpool. I think the fairer statement would be to say Liverpool simply must not finish the game without the 3 points.

Not any better than Gerrard Coutinho and Lucas.

In fact that Liverpool midfield three is better.

When do you ever play that? Don't you almost always play Gerrard/Henderson and one other? Isn't it usually Sterling or Countiho rather than both except against the total backs to the wall relegation fodder?

I'd rather have Matic/Luiz/Oscar than Gerrard/Henderson/Another any day of the week.

I'd rather have Paulinho/Eriksen/Sandro and Ozil/Flamini/Ramsey too now I think of it.

Only one i agree with is Arsenals, both Spurs and Chelseas midfield isn't better.

Gerrard is better than both Matic and Luiz as a holding midfielder.

I would say Coutinho is more talented than Oscar as well.

It is, but i think because of Gerrards form as a holding midfield, Rodgers is trying to move Lucas into the position Allen or Henderson sometimes occupy.

Totally different kinds of players. Your creativity comes from your deepest midfield where as Chelsea's is from their furthest forward one. Really the comparison is Gerrard vs Oscar, Matic vs Lucas and Luiz vs Henderson. Gerrard's better than Oscar, Matic is better than Lucas and Luiz/Henderson are different players, depends what you want from a midfielder.

I would say Coutinho is more talented than Oscar as well.

Definitely don't agree with this and neither does Scolari, who's a very smart coach imo.

I don't think you can talk about your midfield three of Gerrard/Lucas/Coutinho then when you never actually play that.

Agree with this as well, but how do you know Paulinho is a much better player than Henderson, because of his form with Brazil?

To be honest i think Brazil have a host of decent-ish box to box/DMs, none of them are world class, or way above the level Henderson has shown this season.

Isn't this Henderson's first season where he has actually been relevant in football?

Coutinho was always 2nd to Neymar when they were both coming through in Brazil. Throughout the youth teams it was always those two who attracted attention, Scolari may think different but in terms of natural ability i think Coutinho is better.

Scolari has a penchant for box to box/DM hybrids like Ramires, Paulinho Lucas etc it seems.

Oscar hasn't been any better than Coutinho this season.

Wouldn't call Paulinho world class either but he was quality in the confederations cup against Spain, Mexico and Uruguay. Henderson's a tidy player in good form but I think he benefits a lot from the players around him. Gerrard and Suarez are the real quality in your team. Everyone else seems to have quite a simple role which involves getting those two on the ball as much as possible.

Isn't this Henderson's first season where he has actually been relevant in football?

Nope he was pretty decent before he came to Liverpool when he was at Sunderland, at that time both us and United were scouting him.

Oscar was one of the best players in the world in the first half of the season but he's dropped off since then. Coutinho's been really inconsistent all season hasn't he?

Coutinho could play the Oscar role too though, he's done it for Liverpool before. He's never going to get a game ahead of Neymar (who's clearly the biggest talent of the three) but it's not like he couldn't play ahead of Oscar as well, Scolari just clearly thinks Oscar's better at that position.

Personally I'd say going forward they're quite similar in ability but Oscar works a lot harder and is much better defensively.

So it's basically his first season being relevant, then...have you seen Paulinho play outside of Spurs and Brasil?

He can but i think he only started playing that role from January onwards, since then he has got more attention but it may be too late to force himself into Scolaris plans, has he already has a settled squad one that as you say did very well in the Confederations cup.

Coutinho has been inconsistent, but since December he has been in better form than Oscar, generally showing up in most of the big games we've played this season.

This is what i'm talking about when i said when they were coming through the Brazil youth teams from u 15 level upwards both him and Neymar were both generally considered Brazils biggest talents at that age group.

Well, a lot of 'Pool fans weren't a big fan of his cringeworthy media statements last season. All seems to have been conveniently forgotten now.

It's your season, rewrite history all you want. Who am I to stop you.

You're a loon.

Perhaps the difference between this season and last is that he has proven he can walk the walk as well as talk the talk. This season has actually proven that all the "cringeworthy stuff" he was coming off with was actually far from cringeworthy as he was telling it like it is.

I look forward to hearing the man speak. He is charming, intelligent and articulate and he is proving himself to be a heck of a tactician too.

Keep taking the pills bud.

...according to who?

According to his performances, media etc. In that u17 tournamemt he was the 2nd best player in the team, at that time Brazils no 10.
Yes...what media? Who said that Coutinho was the 2nd best player on our U17 team in 2009?
He was very very inconsistent with Vasco as well when he was signed by Inter, as well as when he joined Inter

Well it's not an absolute pittance in comparison, but I take your point.

I never said spending money is key to all things. All I am disputing is the assertion that Mr. Bullshit has done it scrapping the barrel bottom. He has spend a significant amount of money since he joined Liverpool. Some managers would give their left nut for a chance to spend £100m in 2 seasons.

Also, you cannot dispute that you have had the fortune of managerial changes at all three top clubs. All credit to Mr. Bullshit for taking the full advantage of it and for Liverpool's performances this season. Neither I, or anyone else can deny it.

Although forgive me if I am not ready to hail him as some kind of Robinhood, who has come as a messiah for the poor and the downtrodden Liverpool fans.

Some managers wouldn't fancy the job of taking over a side that finished 8th in the league, & have to offload
flops like Carroll, Downing, & Adam, plus get rid of ageing high-earners such as Kuyt, Maxi, & Bellamy, & then try start to build a team that will challenge the usual suspects for a top 4 spot. I doubt there's many managers out there who could have done that with £100 million.

How much did you pay for Fellaini & Mata again ?

Liverpool have always spent big. No other club in world football has spent so much in the last 24 years and not won their league.

Nothing new in that. United regularly spent big in the 70's & 80's yet still went 26 seasons without a title. Rodgers has actually spent £95 million & re-couped £42 million in sales. & that's not taking into account players out on loan who will probably be sold in the summer - Reina, Borini, Assaidi - Considering where we were when he took over, to where we are now, I'd say the money he's spent has been fairly modest all things considered, irrespective of whether we win the league or not.

100 million loses for the last two seasons. Probably another 50 mil loss for this season as you hadnt European football.

A pretty big investment for an established club like liverpool.

I love how quick the Liverpool crew are to defend any criticism of their club on here. One good season in years and suddenly everything they do is right and Rodgers is an untouchable genius.

I cant wait for Jose to snatch it away from Stevie Me on the final game of the season. Preferably the final kick of the game, in injury time. The poetry explosion on RAWK will be epic.

I'm really going to prevent myself from accessing any forms of media be it the internet or television when Liverpool win the league. It's going to be bloody unbearable.

That could be significantly worse if there's investment and a failure to progress from a CL group of seeds, coupled with the fact that City, Chelsea managers will have settled and United will reinvest as will Spurs and Arsenal. Those bright skies ahead may turn visibly darker, not for the first time.

No, he's just a very good manager, who's done a terrific job in a relatively short space of time, & with a budget that is dwarfed by those of other top clubs.

What exactly is there to be critical of ?

I love how quick the United crew are quick to attack Liverpool fans enjoying the moment. One bad season in years and suddenly everything Liverpool do is irritating and bitterness comes out.

Once Liverpool keep spending on players I am happy. As long as they dont build a big shiny new stadium. Its the best long term investment any club can make.

With all respect, feck your moment, this is a United forum, it baffles me why so many of you are getting promoted.

They're getting banned quickly too, so don't worry about that.

I personally don't mind rival posters on here, in fact there's a lot of brilliant posters up here from different clubs, but at the moment, you can't say a single thing about Liverpool without a large portion of them swarming in. It's a bit overbearing.

It's a United forum ffs, what do you expect ? Would you like us to send you one of those helium balloons with "well done on your one good season in years" on it ?
It's good for us all to have the tables turned, you can see United fans becoming bitter and calling every decision you get corrupt and you get to see just how fecking daft Liverpool fans have looked for the last 20 odd years for doing it. United fans get the feelings of bitterness seeing our rivals compete for league titles and having a laugh at our expense but with experience of seeing how daft you lot looked gobbing off from 7th and crawling from the woodwork here there and everywhere once the football on the pitch starts to match the talk off it.
United getting a few dodgy penalties is seemingly a completely different animal now your looking from inside of the box huh ;)
