Manchester United Vs Bayer Leverkusen

It's not like we're playing Wednesday night and Saturday lunchtime. There's plenty of time to rest the likes of RVP for Sunday, no way should he be rested for this. Also, This is Moyes' first CL game so I really can't see him taking anything for granted as SAF sometimes did.

Yeah the calls to rest big names is retarded. Moyes will put out the strongest team possible for this. He'd be taking a massive risk if he didn't and I don't think he can afford to take any risks here.

Giggs to start then?

Well with Welbeck, Nani and Kagawa most likely out, it's a massive possibility Giggs or Young will get the start. Unless we start Hernandez up top with RVP behind him and put Rooney out wide. That's unlikey though.

5-0 Fellaini 5 goals

Moyes won't rest too many here, if anyone, it's going to be Ferdinand and he'll probably be the only one. There's a decent gap between this game and the City game. City also have to travel away while we're in Manchester for the next four games so next to no travelling to do at all. That should be the one big plus and allow us to get the likes of Hernandez, Kagawa, and Nani up to speed over the next set of games (except for Nani in this one, obviously).

Changes from Crystal Palace:

Rafael > Fabio (if he's fit)
Evans/Smalling > Ferdinand
Fellaini > Anderson
Giggs > Young

de Gea, Vidic, Evra, Valencia, Carrick, Rooney, van Persie to keep their places.

A lot of people are saying we'd be resting too many players for an important Champions League game where we really need to get off to a winning start. However, I think three of these four changes make the side stronger while freshening things up at the same time. So much so, that if Hernandez started over van Persie, I wouldn't be arsed at all. I still think Hernandez and Kagawa will make their appearances from the bench, regardless of how the game is going.

Edit: Scratch that on Kagawa, if he's been ill then he's probably going to have to try and make sub appearances against Liverpool and West Brom rather than here.

So can anyone think of any excuses why Kagawa wouldn't be playing in this one then?

I'm sure someone can think of something, but I'm not sure what I'm going to do if he doesn't start tonight.

He's just had flu and he lacks match sharpness. The latter is the reason why neither he nor Nani will play at the Etihad on Sunday.

Must have missed this news, injured?

Just seen the above post re: Kagawa

This type of hypocrisy annoys me but is a fact of life. Imagine how Benitez would be getting treated if he had done exactly what Mourinho has done so far at Chelsea, drop Mata, Shirley up front, loan out Lukaku, lose to Everton. I'm sure they would be calling for his head yet Mourinho remains relatively unscathed.

To be fair to him Rafa managed to win at Everton last season, bit worried we couldn't even get a draw.

Agreed. We are only four games into the season, players need games not rest.

It's nice to know that we'll have a solid midfield going into our first CL group game. No more will teams like Basil walk through our midfield with Carrick and Fellaini about. :p

Just found out that they're showing the u19 game live here in Denmark :D Just a shame that they ain't showing the actual game on any publicly available channels due to FCK.

Leverkusen are a very good and organised team, anyone who is following Bundesliga can tell you that. Stable club with a good eye for young talent, I think they will do well in our group. We better be at our best today or we might be in for a surprise. With Moyes focusing on our defensive side of the game I must admit I'm very optimistic, the attacking side will come with time. You need to be at your best at the back first in the Champions League, and it seems we are already close to it.

Really surprised at some of the lineups posted, do people really think Moyes is going to go easy on Leverkusen?

Just a quick reminder, 2 years ago, Leverkusen were in a group with Chelsea, Valencia and Genk and were already qualified after 5 games. they fecked up the last game away to Genk and finished 2nd behind Chelsea because of it, but they beat Chelsea and Valencia at home and could have easily topped the group with a win in that last game against last placed Genk.

But Leverkusen rarely showed their best football in european competitions, especially their performances in the Europa league were underwhelming in the last years and the 7-1 loss to Barca 2 years ago was downright embarrasing. I still have doubts about their mentality in big games, should be interesting if that has changed.

Rio is soon to be 35 and may not be able to play 3 games in a week? And Evans is pretty good...

I cannot see Moyes being particularly keen on swapping out one out of two cogs that keeps his defense ticking, more less when going into his first Champions League game of the season. Unless there are of course fitness concerns, as you mentioned.

We don't know because we've yet to see how he'll approach these competitions. Fergie probably would rest a few players even at this early stage to give us the best chance at the Etihad.

I think its important to send out a message that we're taking the CL seriously, not to mention I think Leverkusen will be a tough side, we need a strong side out and rest players if we're in the lead.

There's no right or wrong way to approach tonight and I won't be one criticising Moyes if it goes wrong tonight. However, my reasoning for bringing in the likes of Kagawa, Fellaini, Hernandez etc is to get the up and running and to ensure key players are ready for the weekend. After City we've got an easier run of fixtures and can then play our strongest team in the remaining 5 CL games. That's just my take anyway, and one I've seen us do many times over the years

Finally someone who agrees with me. They were a disgrace. Apparently some of the players were star srtuck by Messi.

Difference is that United have not had as tougher group in the CL for recent years. With 5 days between Bayer Leverkusen at home and City away, and with no travelling involved, there is no need to be resting players.

And Moyes said: “After the draw I phoned Sir Alex and he said he thought it was one of the hardest draws United had ever had in the Champions League. And if it’s coming from him, it must be tough!
“When you draw teams from Germany and Spain, and Shakhtar, who have been in the quarter-finals, it makes it a tough group.

There is someone who disagrees? They were ridiculed in every single newspaper in Germany, especially the two players (I think it was Kadlec and Friedrich, both aren't at the club anymore) who fought over Messi's shirt at halftime !!!!. The club then took the shirt away and auctioned it off for charity.

Hyppiä made a joke about this in their press conference last week saying something along the lines that "he hopes his players won't be awe struck by walking onto the pitch of Old Trafford and that they hopefully will think about other things then how to get an autograph from Wayne Rooney".

I think the embarrassment from that day is still pretty much present in and around the club and the players might be out on the field tonight with the mindset that they have a lot to prove.
