Mesut Özil

I feel bad for Ozil. With the old number 10 being such a popular position these days none of the Worlds elite whatsoever had any space for him.

I know he'll say all the things he has to say "I'm a Gunner" blah blah blah.. But in the real World he must have been gutted when he knew his only option was joining Arsenal.

His only option wasn't joining Arsenal. He could refuse and stay at Madrid.

I can see why he didn't get it though. It's usually the magicians assistant that does the disappearing. It's a decent attempt at a gag but doesn't really hold up to scrutiny.
It was a nod to a joke I made about him when he played us, about how he's a proper magician and managed to make himself disappear. It's a wider joke that works better in context, admittedly, but I'm ok with it. It got a few laughs first time round.

I can link you to it if you want, for context?

Had Ozil turned up today, Arsenal would have scored 5-6 goals, not just 3. And they wouldn't have conceded 6 because when Ozil plays well Arsenal's defence is nearly flawless...

Do people really believe that Ozil hasn't had great games vs top teams, e.g. Barcelona? I think it is widely acknowledged that he was second only to Ronaldo at Madrid.

They wouldn't be. I didn't want him at any stage during the summer for precisely the reasons I'm stating here now. Though I'd have taken him before Fellaini as it's well documented on here how I feel about him.

You really wouldn't want someone like Ozil in your team?

With all the creative problems you have in your side, you still wouldn't want him?

Sure, call him the nearly man, call him the guy who doesn't turn up in big games. You'd still do anything to have him in your squad.

To play where? We play with wingers. He wouldn't play ahead of Rooney in his natural position, so there's no position at United for him. We can't even fit Kagawa in there as it is, signing another number 10 wouldn't have helped us any. And he isn't what we needed. We needed someone with balls and creativity who can play in central midfield. Ozil isn't it. Admittedly neither is Fellaini, but that's another discussion entirely.

You play with wingers. You're in 9th.

Someone like Ozil could have revolutionised your game. If you've got him in your squad, you find a way to play him. You don't pick Ashley Young just because he suits some archaic style of play.

If we win our game in hand tomorrow we go 8th. So yeah! Not so shit now are we?

Ouch, this hurts Alastair. As much as us winning 13 league titles (5 since you have won something more than Emirates cup) playing with wingers.

We won the title last season playing that archaic style, and were a matter of seconds away from winning the last 3 with our archaic wing system. Ask Ashley Young to show you his title winners medal.

Anyway, that's all beside the point. I wasn't interested in signing Ozil at any point in the summer. I said at the time he was a very good signing for you, and I still believe that but he isn't at all what United needed. I'm not sure he's what you needed either, and I still insist you'd have been better served spending that money strengthening your weak areas. Attacking midfield wasn't really one of them.

Firstly, I was only taking the mickey with the archaic style comments, as you know.

Last season, we struggled to break teams down. True fact. Watching us was tumescent at times. Don't listen to the media saying 'Arsenal always score loads of goals.' It's not true. Check out the last fifteen games last season - it was all based upon sensible defending.

We had to improve our forward line. We needed a centre forward and a great creator. We got one of them.

It's only a personal opinion, but I think you had enough creativity with Cazorla, Wilshere, Walcott etc and would have benefited more with a real top goalscorer. With £40mil to spend and Real Madrid in selling mood I'd have been hoping to come back over the channel with Benzema in my suitcase rather than Ozil. But maybe that's just me.

You could well go and sign him in January and then that'll be it sorted, but for me that would have been my priority.

If you had not offered £40m+1 you probably would have!

It was a funny offer though. Credit to Wenger for making everyone laugh with that. It means that they will struggle to do any business with you for some years but still it was fun.

It's a personal opinion that happens to be wrong.

They were equal priorities, and it was a massive catastrophe that we didn't get one. It will probably cost us this season.

Debatable how wrong it is. A proper goalscorer in front of what you already had would have lifted you more I feel. Ozil will put goals on a plate for Giroud, but is he good enough to score the big goals in the big games? I'm not sure he is.

I think your team makes enough bullets, you just didn't have the right guy firing the gun.

No he isn't good enough. Clearly. You can't compare him favourably to a Suarez or an Aguero.

We are firing enough bullets, but only now Ozil is here and Ramsey has kicked on. We weren't last season.

Probably a controversial opinion but if I was an Arsenal fan, I'd much rather see a sullen, pissed off reaction like Ozil's than the likes of Traore who didn't give a shit after their 8-2 loss against us.

If Hollywood ever need an actor to play the invisible man in the reboot, this is the man.

He's just not capable of being the next Zidane full stop, he lacks even half the aura Zidane carried onto the pitch

He had a couple of decent moments but you'd expect a player signed for such a huge fee to make more of a difference in the big matches.

Still scarred by Phil Jones earlier in the season he likes to go missing when the big boys turn up and make a difference

Superb player but failed to make much of an impact tonight. I suppose it'd help if he had a world class striker in front of him, though.

That's games against United, City and Chelsea in which he was anonymous. No doubting his talent but maybe starting to see why Madrid were happy to see him go. Not a big game player perhaps.

Personally, I expected more from him tonight but some of the reactions on here are a bit premature. Arsenal are still in a great position and he has been one of the main reasons for that.

In our two legs against Madrid last season, any El Clásico I saw him in in the past, and games against top opposition this season he has been completely anonymous.

I think he was quite good in the first leg.
