Gaming PlayStation 4 (Console)

Let's just say, Sony were not happy with RSX, AMD have gone balls out with the APU route. Cell is the CPU, AMD APUs just happen to come with some x86 cores, which sort of helps. AMD APUs have a load of junk in them, Cell has gone in instead. It might not have the PPE, there are 8 SPEs in it!

Sony have a production problem, they might not make it this year - but they will wait, because it's good. You will see NeXtBox this year.
So your saying new Xbox will get the jump on the ps4 like last time then. Should be interesting how it pans out this time round

There are a few problems as I've heard it. A) they are using different x86 cores to the ones Microsoft are using, which are mobile parts, and B) getting the Cell parts on the same process. Cell parts have to run at 3.2GHz. As Lambs joked, the thing might melt.

Like the PS3 was supposed to do with the 360 or will it actually this time?

Yep, exactly like that. Lump the PS2 in there too

I've no idea what about 90% of the posts in this thread mean.

Basically, just like the launch of the PS3, the PS4 (according to Weaste) will shit all over everything and be "the bestest evah!!!!!!!" when in reality, once again it'll be same old same old.

It happens every new generation of console, and to be honest it'll be the one thing I don't miss when they go

You don't get more innovate than getting a mad CPU with two different ISAs having to feed a bog standard GPU.

That's not answering my point.

PS3 was, until they decided to stick RSX in. Blame the likes of Lambs for that!

Not happening this time, the PS4 is an all balls out bandwidth beast. NeXtBox is limp, as I said, an odd design for this day and age, custom silicon all over the show!

Why don't you explain what this means to everyone, so I can once again be right and make you look like you don't know what you are talking about as usual?

Don't worry, your not alone. I get the general gist, but the more technical stuff goes over my head

That's because Weaste likes to spam these discussions with lots of theoretical stuff that most don't understand to make it look like he's right.

Then when he's wrong, as per usual, he blames the people who have to work with the machines, people like me.

It works because people tend to think he knows what he is talking about, when in reality he regurgitates the same shit everytime sprinkled with hardware knowledge, to mask the fact he knows feck all about actual gaming and what it takes to make those games!

Ever wondered why he never appears in game threads (other than Sony 1st party ones)? His short appearance in the Halo4 thread was to claim the series was stalled and people aren't interested anymore shows why. He's a Sony shill!

Have you actually seen the design or are you just talking shit based on rumours?

We hear things. Weaste then acts like the PS4 best thing evah!!!! When in fact it's somewhat of a climbdown from Sony after losing a shitload of money, sacking people and the mighty PS3 not outperforming the shit 360 in games.

Of course, the next xbox is total shit

I was always under the impression that developers preferred working for the XBox because it was "more like a PC", so they were better at optimising it and also the game could be ported to PC easily enough later on, whereas the PS3 was a totally different beast. It's why, for all it's amazingness, nothing was ever properly optimised for it.

It's not down to the developers to sanction double the cost of making two engines.

Weaste pushes the tired line that developers don't want to change and adjust, but that's utter bollocks. Engine programmers love new challenges, but they aren't the ones spending the money.

A lot of this 'amazingness' isn't very amazing to be honest. They spent a lot of money going the Cell route, so had to push it, but in reality they couldn't get it to catch on.

How d'ya mean it looks like an Amiga? Do you mean they've gone retro - or they've gone insane?

As i mentioned earlier, most devs started using the PS3 as the lead console for cross platform games. A lot of teams were struggling developing for Xbox and porting to the PS3, which is the reason for some pretty poor PS3 ports early on. After a the first year or so, most devs switched. EA, Ubisoft, Squeenix, Rockstar and a few others confirmed or hinted they use PS3 as lead.

Yes, but not dedicated engines. It's easier to start on the PS3 and get everything working on the xbox, than the other way round.

Hence why most of those games still work better on the 360, rightly or wrongly (the latter in my opinion, but it is what it is).

How many companies even make their own engine these days ?

how much port work needs to be done between a Xbox360 unreal engine and a ps3, apart from the cheque book, which would take a considerable hammering.

It costs a fecking fortune so license an engine.

But your last sentence is correct, it's more about the money than anything. It's why Sony have climbed down to some extent with the PS4.

I wonder what's wrong with the Amiga, it's a fantastic machine!

Just because they aren't Sony Weaste, you can't dislike them :nono:

I had the commodore 500 and the amiga 1200. I love the Amiga, but it wasn't a looker.

The PS3 was supposed to this unreal machine that is miles better than the 360 (which to a layman like me, can be measured with graphics).

In reality, the graphics are very similar, some games look slightly better on 360, some on PS3. I imagine it'll be exactly the same with the next generation.

I used to be Playstation through and through, like most people I think. I actually bought a PS3 but all of my mates apart from one (who bought a lot later) switched to Xbox. Mainly because of its price, which is a false economy, but it was a genius stroke from Microsoft that clearly worked. I switched to 360 because I wanted to play with my mates online. I dunno why I'm telling this story. Boobs.

I've already said that I don't know very much about the Microsoft console, and I said yesterday I was only comparing it to the PS4 on the recent rumours - the use of custom silicon is an odd design choice. PS4 I'm pretty sure what it is.

Is it true the PS4 will block used/second-hand games and why is that?

I'm the biggest Amiga fan you will ever find. I even reverse engineered the chipset registers on the AGA because there was no hardware reference manual.

I know weaste, I was just wondering what you meant about the styling being similar?

I've had both 360 and PS3 but prefer the latter mainly due to free online and better exclusives (Gears of War, Halo and Alan Wake vs all the stuff PS3 has to offer is really a no-brainer).

The use of the custom hardware for specific tasks, special DMA engines, memory layout like Chip RAM vs Fast RAM, way that the bus mastering seems to work, etc.

It appears I've made a giant fool of myself, I thought you meant they looked, you know...aesthetically similar. I'll just leave this thread for a bit now.

Yeah, Sony like to lose money it seems.

Anyway, care to expand on the "people like Lambs" comment? Or do you want to step away from that remark?

RSX was not supposed to go in, it wasn't the plan, but moaning from the 3rd parties (you) made them swap what was supposed to be there out and use a modified PC part instead.

Ah right, so the usual bollocks then huh? What would you have done oh mighty genius?

Also going by that logic, you should hate the PS4 since they've brought it even further back into line. As they needed to do and, ironically, is what might actually push the PS4 out in terms of graphics this time.

Yeah, how times have changed eh? PS4 all looks rather boring.

Well the likes of me are sorry we can't please the likes of you.

Maybe you should take this up with Sony? After all, they are the ones that have practically admitted defeat in the trying to control the direction of hardware stakes. Maybe the likes of you should do something better?
