Manchester United 2:1 Chelsea

Post-match discussion

Sun, 25 February 2018

A decent performance but a very good win. A poor start, grew in to the game and definitely were the better team 2nd half. Chelsea were very good first half. Great performance all round from lukaku. Matic and Pogba has good games and so did smalling and valencia. Martial went missing and Sanchez was disappointing but all in all an entertaining game and a good result.

Developed a few more grey hairs watching the match. Massive result! Really needed the 3 points!

Did well to win second half. Of course, this thread will be diluted by 'I told you so' accusations and proclamations that we somehow "got it right".

We weren't very good. Chelsea were equally poor. In isolation, this is the sort of match and performance that would be fine in the context of otherwise good football.

Really, our problems still exist, we seldom looked like scoring for the vast majority of the match and our desire in the first half was absolutely shambolic. The three points is great - and much needed. But our attacking football is still terrible and will cause problems going forward.

As for the players, Matic was brilliant today with a well-timed return to form. Martial criticism is baffling considering he was by far our best attacking player in the first half. Lukaku is continuing his good form which is nice to see. Lindelof looks measurably better on the left side of defence, too.

Meh... other side of the coin if we lost the i told you so brigade would tore him a new one

Another to add to the growing list of games where Lukaku has bailed us out.

Team was better in the second half but still nowhere near good enough.

Bailed us out? FFS, he’s part of the team, he is expected to score and help the team. Furthermore, I’m interested to see your growing list as it surely can’t be long. Lukaku was good today, but even a broken clock is right two times a day and so forth.

Six times.

Ta. Not as many as I thought
6/20 is quite a lot though I guess when there are a lot of other refs

Great result. But I still cannot understand the pedestrian nature of our play. I accept we will never be the pressing team under Jose but at least show a bit of urgency. The primary reason for the our counters breaking down is precisely this lack of urgency which allows the whole defence to get back before we get anywhere near the opposition box.

Pressing isn't without its risk. A good team would drag us apart and find space easier with pressing.

There has to be a fine balance in when to press and when to maintain position.

Still buzzing. Will be buzzing after such a win for few days too.

The guts and character we showed after we went down.

Am watching that first goal on loop. So so good. The close control, the movement and passing. Lovely goal

Really impressed with the improvement in the pressing in the second half, pressed them much higher up the pitch. Think we wanted it more than Chelsea and showed how they seemed to settle for the point and stroll around the pitch for most of the second half.

Lindelof played well apart from that blocked clearance which nearly created a chance but you could see he was really annoyed with himself after it, good to have a centre back who can pass forward. McTominay was excellent keeping Hazard in his pocket most of the game apart from their goal. If we can get that Lukaku week in week out as well as the same if not better performances for Pogba we'll be nailed on for 2nd.

Great result, good 2nd half, Matic my MOTM but Lukaku was good as was Tommynay and Pogba, good results against Palace and Liverpool and we’re laughing I reckon.

Much better second half, we got a win and that's most important (although I guess it wasn't entertaining game of football so some of you would prefer we played entertaining but lost). There was a clear tactics issue in the first half, we set up to counter but we really suck at counter. Then we changed our approach a bit and it worked.

Overall a decent game but we must sort out the situation with fullbacks in the summer. Neither of them are good enough. Valencia is just absolutely useless in attack, Lukaku just showed him how to cross the ball as he got tired of Valencia I guess.

When was our last come from behind victory? And when was our last come from behind victory against a top 6 side?

When i was watching it i thought we looked to be making an effort on the press during the first 15mins but then started to get lazy.

I think Mou must have given them a rollicking at half time.

Tale of two halves really. Massive win. Well play Lukaku, Matic, Lindgard and McTominay. Martial needs to improve. Nice to see some fire from Lindelof.

I thought Smalling was excellent, stepped up great few times in second half. Saved Lindeloff from that bad clearance. Can't wait for Baily to come back.

Martial was awful. Pogba average, Lingard gave us much needed energy and link up with Sanchez. Matic was excellent. Maybe Lukaku best game for us.

Great three points although the match was pretty flat for large parts. To be expected though as both teams were very cagey.

Liverpool in two weeks and we can cement that second spot!

No wonder Matic was completely confused when he saw that note.

Massive 3 pts. Game of 2 halves. No standout players in a negative or positive manner, but as a team well disciplined, even if the "let them have the ball" tactic did not work in the first half. Many of the players grew in to the game.

The offside decision was correct. The left side of Morata's body (shoulder, torso and backside) was in advance of Lindelof's right foot.
First half from us was terrible with only Lukaku's goal making it bearable. Second half was a bit better and I'll take the win all day long, especially against Chelsea who we rarely beat these days.

Super great win today. Lukaku played with such a great heart for a United win. MOTM=Lukaku!
