Rafael

My wrist has become incredibly painful over these past few days. I'm trying not to get carried away but it's difficult when a youngster plays that comfortably against a team of Juventus' level.

anyone think he is ready for first team football .. he wont get it at united this season obv , but is he good enough to start for some premiership teams ?

Its only 2 matches, so take it for what its worth.

But I genuinely see him as more ready than Evans. He's not just playing for us to a certain acceptable level - he's actually starring in these 2 matches as much as he possibly could.

That passage of play where he took the ball forward past 2 Juventus players and held off their challenges... Then when he took the ball off the Juventus player shielding the ball, beat 2 players and was kicked to the floor where he picked up a bloody cut above his eye. And then he got up and played again.

He's not just got the talent, he's got the character.

May remove Brown from my fantasy football team to be safe...

Same here, Lizard.
Every single red on my MSN has been immediately informed of his brilliance.

Actually, the one weakness he's shown so far is that he's got feck all for a left foot. A few wild swings when he's had the chance that have been hide, wide and far from handsome.

Could certainly end up on the right of midfield, but why would you do that when he's so stellar at the back?

I'm obviously talking about the right wing. With Ronaldo out till September, it will be a good idea to give this lad a chance on the right wing. If we were to give him first team opportunities THIS SEASON, it should be on the wing. Positional mistakes are inevitable for a youngster of his experience. One mistake as a full back that leads to us dropping points and everybody will jump on his back calling him cnut and all. If we want him to develop as a world class full back, its better to put him in the reserves with the odd cup game. He still has a lot to improve as a defender and a lot to learn. He is 18 after all.

Well, Neville had been making such positional mistakes till a few years ago. I really think he has enough redeeming features. Not too dissimilar to when Evra started turning the tables and keeping Heinze out of the side.

Ronaldo + Rafael is going to look almost as potent as Ronaldo + Evra. :wenger:

was impressed with him in the 2nd half tonight. Defended well and was good attacking. Lost it a couple of times but that'll improve

You wouldn't think he's not played football for so long with the way he has settled straight in, if he continues his form then Simpson may not come back

Isn't Fabio supposed to be the better one? Hopefully they'll both get a few games in the FA and Carling cups.

How do we know who's friggin playing... I'd let my twin bro play a couple of my matches if it ment him getting his United debut aswel!! Just a thought

any videos from Rafael in the second half versus juve????

The most amazing thing about this is almost the fact there's two of them!

That would have been like Messi if had a twin brother when Barca bought him - without making any direct comparisons between Messi and Rafael - I'll leave the slightly over the top comments to Ekeke :D.

Heres a song i wrote about the twins to the tune of Hi Ho Silver Lining, take or leave the verse but i think the chorus is a winner

They play all over the pitch, baby,
they look the same,
Beating teams at Old trafford,
and White Hart Lane.
Flying out across the country
And playing Great
Beating players with their skills
We're gonna win the league, at this rate

(Chorus)
And its hi - ho DA SILVA LINING
and away they go now baby,
They come from brazil where the sun is shining
But We wont make a fuss
Though its obvious.

He sure is good enough, but teams outside of the top 4 generally don't have the style of play that would allow a right back that goes forward as muych as he does in the team, as they don't have a Rio behind him to cover up..

vs Juventus

Was down at OT for this boring friendly tonight and the only bright moment was Da Silva. I have to say I was immensely impressed by Rafael.

For an 18 year-old, he was assured, confident, strong and tenacious. Did a couple of great individual pieces of skill too!

He may be a very young man but he played like a 25 year-old.

I've not been so giddy with such a young talent since Best, Giggs, Sharp and Ronaldo.

I'd throw him in against Portsmouth. Big fan of Brown but if we've got Fletcher playing down the right we'd lack a bit of width which young Da Silva can provide.

Boss: Rafael has a great chance

Sir Alex described Rafael da Silva’s Old Trafford debut as “very promising” after the Brazilian teenager played 45 minutes in the Reds’ 0-0 draw against Juventus on Wednesday night.

The right back made his first Reds appearance on Monday night in the friendly against Peterborough, where he dazzled onlookers with his pace down the flank.

On Wednesday, he entered the game at half-time to loud cheers from the Old Trafford crowd and went on to catch the manager’s eye once again.

“Rafael started quietly but then he exploded into the game,” Sir Alex told MUTV.

“We’re very pleased with his progress and the boy has a great chance. When you bear in mind the fact that he’s not played for a year, it was a very promising debut at Old Trafford.”

The Reds boss was also delighted with the crowd, who remained vocal despite the game’s lack of goals.

“It’s great when we have all these kids inside Old Trafford to watch us,” he said. “We offer cheaper tickets for children on nights like this and they were fantastic. I think they will have enjoyed the match.

“We saw two good teams and a lot of good football from both sides. It was an open game and there were some good openings.

“There were maybe 40,000 kids here tonight and they don’t all get many opportunities to see United. That pleases me more than anything.”

To be honest he was my only motivation to make the trip tonight. He sure did not let me down.

Rodrigo also looks special, even more so when watching his movement around the park live.

That's quite some statement!

I'd be a bit more cautious than that. I like to see more of him, especially in competitive games.

Hopefully, I can agree with you in 6 months time.

I liked Rodrigo and I think he has much potential. But his positioning, and distribution could be improved and for that I think he couldn't have a better mentor than Scholes.

FERGUSON IS HOLDING A PAIR OF ACES

Chelsea have Luiz Felipe Scolari in charge, but Manchester United can boast the boys from Brazil.

Following the arrival of the Da Silva twins, Rafael and Fabio, Sir Alex Ferguson now has four Brazilian youngsters in his squad.

Throw in Argentinian Carlos Tevez and there is a distinct South American flavour to United again after the failures of Juan Veron (Argentina), Diego Forlan (Uruguay) and Kleberson (Brazil).

The first of the new wave of Brazilians to arrive was Anderson in an £18million deal from Porto last summer. He was followed by another midfielder, Rodrigo Possebon, who joined midway through last season and has impressed this summer.

But the Da Silva twins, 18, have excited Ferguson. He is not a man to throw superlatives around – but he described Rafael’s debut against Peterborough on Monday, his first game for a year, as “sensational”.

And he hinted Rafael could be pushing Wes Brown and Gary Neville for the right-back slot before long with Fabio, a left-back, not far behind.

“Rafael was a sensation against Peterborough – it was a real eye-opener. He hadn’t played for a year yet played the full 90 minutes,” said Ferguson.

“His brother Fabio played 45 minutes and also did well. We were really pleased.”

Now United boss Ferguson could fast-track Rafael because he already looks beyond the level of the reserves. He added: “You know what football is like – sometimes it turns up some star, a little nugget and certainly on the evidence of Monday night we have a good player.

“But they were both fantastic, absolutely brilliant. We knew that anyway, but considering they hadn’t played for a year it was quite amazing.”

United first spotted the Da Silva twins playing in a junior tournament in France. They kept tabs on them and their star
displays in helping Fluminense win the Manchester United/Nike Premier Cup in Hong Kong three years ago
convinced Ferguson they should be signed up.

United did that in February 2007 – much to the annoyance of Fluminense – but red tape prevented them from bringing the pair to England on a full-time basis until earlier this year.

To avoid the need for work permits – which they would not have received because they are not full internationals – the twins needed to apply for Portuguese citizenship. And FIFA rules do not allow youngsters moving countries to sign pro contracts until they reach 18, which they did early last month.

Finally, United had to wait for international clearance from the Brazilian FA, which they received last weekend. Ferguson said: “As soon as they agreed to sign for us a year ago, Fluminense wouldn’t play them and we couldn’t bring them here until they got Portuguese citizenship.

“That didn’t come through until after the transfer deadline had passed in January, so they have been training with us ever since without being able to play.

“But we got clearance from the Brazilian FA at the weekend and I put them straight in at Peterborough.”

Ferguson explained why United, in common with all the top clubs, are recruiting kids from abroad – and why he is happy to back the Manchester United/Nike Premier Cup, a tournament that brings together Under-15 teams from all over the world.

He said: “I watch academy games and it is the same humdrum stuff all the time to be honest. I don’t see anything exceptional or surprising. I don’t want to criticise our academy system, but I see a different football in this
tournament.

“The technique and comfort on the ball and the way of playing is more pleasing on the eye – to me anyway. That’s to do with a different football culture and upbringing.”

The twins caught the eye of Rio Ferdinand, who played at Peterborough. He said: “They looked like they had been playing regular games for the last two years – so that’s talent for you. You ask yourself, ‘Could an English player do the same thing?’ and it’s difficult to say.”

Interesting thing is this, Fabio has captained his brother before and if you watched the under 17 world cup, Fabio was the better prospect. He scored more goals including an overhead kick and was absolutely brilliant on the left. I really hope that he also gets his chance to prove his quality.

I think he's the right back Ferguson has been looking for, for many years. Ever since Cicinho turned us down.

Reackon he'll be fast tracked now. I expect to see him start against Newcastle or Portsmouth.
