Fowler was phenomenal in his prime. He could score every kind of goal imaginable.

Robbie Fowler: better than Shearer, van Nistelrooy, Batistuta, Cantona, C.Ronaldo, Eto'o and as good as van Basten and Romario.

Yeh Fowler was a top England based striker, but not on a world scale. A bit like Shearer, in the sense that he isn't rated that highly abroad.

I don't get this logic, A.

That he was or wasn't not highly rated abroad does not impact on his ability whatsoever. I would say of those 'abroad' who actually saw him play would have appreciated just how bloody good he was. Maybe it was about exposure.

On Shearer, those 'abroad' would have seen him as a archetypal Engliah striker. Shearer was much, much more than that.

Well I think it does. When a player is a magnificent talent, Europe tends to pick up on it. Like Rooney is rated highly in Europe and now Wilshere is starting to get recognised.

Players like Fowler and Shearer will be remembered fondly in England because they scored bucket-loads of goals and contributed massively to their team, and rightly so. Great players for their clubs. They just both lacked something which would make Europe sit up and take notice of them.

Your point about exposure is a good one - it might well have been the case that they did not get rated in Europe because they weren't seen enough. It's impossible to prove either way. But as far as I'm concerned, they were just on the second rung of strikers, behind your Ronaldos and Henrys of this world. That second rung is hardly a bad place to be though.

I don't agree but fair enough!

Fowler was a fantastic striker, not sure why he didn't get more chances for england.

Sadly he has to get past the likes of Ronaldo, Batistuta, Shevchenko, Henry, Bergkamp, Shearer, Bierhoff, Baggio, Weah, Raul and more. The main thing that stands against him is the fact that Liverpool weren't playing in the biggest competitions, or much for the national team, at the time so you didn't get to see how he'd do against the best Europe could offer very often.

EDIT: And that's kinda the point Alastair was making, damn my slow typing and thought process.

Fowler was a great striker, as we found to our cost plenty of times. Comparing him to Henry, Batistuta et al is missing the point imo. You can only score against the team you're playing against and Fowler invariably did that. He can hardly be blamed for not scoring hatfuls in Europe if his team weren't there.

One of the best finishers in Premier League history, and although he may not have scored that many in Europe it's because he never really had the chance to do so. Doesn't make him any less of a player, you can only score goals against the teams put in front of you and he did that many times.

Fowler was a finisher, world class at it aswell. As an all round player he has pretty average. Everything about his finishing was class though, the cnut.

Basically this. The list above if it is just about pure finishing he is right up there for his peak 2-3 years. But he had little else about him. And he went off the boil far too early in his career.

Plus he is a cnut. Cant get much worse than playing for Liverpool twice, Leeds and City

Fowler was magnificent. One of the most electric finishers around the mid nineties. Very underrated. Injuries took its toll.

He was a very good striker, but nowhere near as good as any of those you mentioned.

Also a waste of talent cos he could have been sooo much more. Fantastic finisher, what a bastard.

Also this thread used to be fun.

Like playing for United? ;)

Liverpool 1-0 down at Braga at HT. Braga have a great record at home don't they? If they can get a 2-0 win today they should knock Liverpool out.

It's all Woys fault again.

Typical Liverpool - lose to bottom of the league West Ham, fight against United like it's their cup final, lose the following game to the giants of European football, FC Braga.

They're constantly label Evertonians as "small time" when they're exactly the same!
