Rio Ferdinand

Every time they booed him, he played a cracking pass forward.

At times his communication with Evans was piss poor.

Man United hold Rio extension clause

Manchester United hold an option to extend Rio Ferdinand's contract which was thought to expire at the end of the current campaign.

The clause, which is understood to be similar to the one which the club had with Dimitar Berbatov, means that the former England international is not necessarily a free agent at the end of the season as suggested.

West Ham have already been linked with a summer move for Ferdinand, with manager Sam Allardyce admitting he would be interested if the defender left Old Trafford. And there would likely be lucrative interest from abroad in the 33-year-old's signature.

Sir Alex Ferguson has already hinted that Ferdinand could be set to extend his stay with United, despite the duo's public falling out recently over the player's refusal to wear a Kick It out t-shirt.

"I think Rio can play for two or three more years," Ferguson said recently. "He is not as quick as he was but that is not a big issue for me. His experience is important and there is no reason he can't stay on. I didn't even realise his contract was up."

An ESPN source said: "Rio has this year and one more year on his present contract. It is a kind of an option."

He just corrected someone's spelling mistake on twitter. The world is ending.

He partners off with and has great communication with Evans.

Always thought the best partnerships were:
Rio/Vidic
Rio/Evans
Vidic/Smalling

I just realized today how lucky we are to have heard the phrase 'cleared by Ferdinand' so many times over the years. Not sure how I feel about Rio the personality (as distinct from the person, whom I suspect is quite agreeable), but the player is fantastic and will be sorely missed.

Personally think rio has 1 more year in him, but he will be 35 coming on 36 by then.

Smalling and Evans will be that little bit better by then IMO.

He'll play for at least one more season.

He's still an asset to us, even if his consistancy has gone a bit to shit with his fitness dropping.

If anything, his fitness has improved recently as he looks sharper and even goes up for corners these days. He outmuscled Benteke and was wrongly awarded a freekick against.

He has shown good consitency and makes few mistakes, but his loss of pace is a bit more apparent than I thought; he is still fairly fast for a CB, but not like he used to be. He should definetely take one more season to ease Jones and Smalling into the team

Yeah, but he's prone to the odd shocker as we saw last season and this season, against Spurs for example.

Not being helped by the Big Gaping Black Hole Midfield in front of him I suppose.

At 33-34, being outpaced by Bale isn't a shocker, really. I suppose only Thiago Silva as the good CBs could keep up with him (Wynne is reported to be really fast), and maybe Smalling.

Our midfield has left some holes in front of the defense, but you are too one-dimensional here as there have been too many individual mistakes from our defense this season too, including Rio, but also Evans who hasn't been as good as he was last season. Due to our somewhat slow CBs of late, our defense has can't position themselves too high on the pitch, and thus there is too much space between our midfield and defense on the counter.

I'd like to see him stay on for another season. Despite the injury prone tag he's developed in recent years he's actually played a lot of football in the last 16 months or so.

I think that he could be here for another 2 seasons, though maybe not as a first choice.

Next season I'd like to see us transition to either Evans-Vidic or Evans-Smalling (depending on Vidic's fitness) as our first-choice partnership. If Fergie can for once find the nerve to keep a player around but not necessarily play them much, then I'm all for keeping him around for a couple more seasons. But we don't want a Scholes/Giggs situation where as soon as Evans has one poor match he gets dropped for a slow, past-it Rio for the rest of the season.

Rio has it in him to play here for another 2 years imo. Experience is vital for all the young lads etc.

I'd sign him for another year without a doubt. easily still has something to offer to the club. He currently is one of our first choice centre backs and his experience around the younger players coming through is something we still need. Next season he may not play as much, but he will still get plenty of game time as we move across to Smalling/evans/jones as the key parts of the defence

when rio leaves (either this or next summer), do you think that fergie will spring for a big money CB like hummels?

I'm not sure that when rio leaves, fergie will keep evans-smalling as first choice in the same way rio-vidic were undisputed first chioce for so long.

i think we need to spend big when rio leaves. still think he has at least another season in him left though, maybe two. he is not as quick as he use to be but his reading of the game is brilliant, definitely still capable of shutting down the world's best forwards.

I agree in that we need to spend big again. It's not like the others won't still have a chance and it pays to have at least one experienced (but not too old) head at the back, which we may not have if Vidic isn't fit/isn't here.

I also agree that he has another successful year left here if he wants it. Needs to take a step back of course, and play in the less pacey games (so long as Fergie actually does this). Either way I'd like a big time defender to come in in the summer.

Has Rio said what he wants to do after United? Continue playing at a lower level? Coaching? A passionate character like himself who has been part of one of the best partnerships United has had has to be an asset worth keeping in the club.

I think Rio has improved on his fitness levels, perhaps this is to prove a point to his detractors since the England debacle. He has loads of experience and has shown his committment to the club, i would like to see him playing alongside the likes of evans and smalling for some time to come.

His request to review his decision by Christmas is fair and im sure that behind the scenes much is being done to get the situation sorted well before hand.

Quite frankly i cant see him going to West Ham.

I am sure he will play atleast another season. He has played quite a lot of games this season already due to injuries and it looks like his body is handling it. When we get Vidic and Jones back, we will be able to use Rio more sparingly; which his body will surely be able to handle.
There is no doubting his exprience and ability and SAF will not let him go easily as he is a big asset in training and the dressing room.

one more maybe. just getting older and slower. the forwards he came up playing against have all been replaced with younger, faster, players. he's having a difficult time keeping up when he's fit and rested, let alone when he's tired and sore. had a poor game against villa.

I hate statements like that, seeing as he's been one of our highest ever earners and was a bitch about contracts.

He was poor against Villa? feck that's news to me, AND the MOTM thread.

Still our best defender, still the best centre half in England alongside Kompany although Rio has started the season better.

Does he ever do something in training except for fecking the air?
