Shinji Kagawa

I think Kagawa played well on the left WHEN Mata was playing in the middle (as opposed to Rooney). The toe linked up and interchanged well.

Basically Kagawa will shine in a versatile and creative front four - but not when he is asked to stick left and hug the touchline.
precisely. he thrives off of the system.

I wonder what you thought about Lahm in midfield then
All players should play in a position that best utilizes their strengths and if possible diminishes their weaknesses to negligible levels. Kagawa does not have any strengths that suit the position of flank player. He is not strong at dribbling, he doesn't have pace, he isn't strong at crossing and defensively, he is average. All Kagawa's strengths are suited to playing central between forward and midfield.
I don't assign a label to players and pigeon hole them for the rest of their career. If someone ever suggests player X should play in position Y, I never say "he can't play there coz he a Y!". I think about what he is good at and what he is bad at. There are several United players I want to see playing in a different position to the one they have been pigeon holed as.

Cleverley average rating from 20 starts = 6.78
Fletcher average rating from 10 starts = 6.72
Young average rating from 15 starts = 6.66 (bad omen if ever there was one )

The standard of Hartlepools United is 6.85. The standard of Manchester United is 7.85+. Anything below 7/10 is complete and utter failure.

There is no way that the average rating for our entire playing squad would be 7.85+ for the season just past. We played such average dross as a team, that only De Gea could average over a 7. Even Rooney would average barely above a 7 if you take into account how poor the second half of his season was.

I see. I misunderstood your original point. My apologies

The average rating for the team was 6.94. The reason we had a 6.xx average team rating is because we had so many 6.xx players.

Hopefully Shinji shines tonight, LVG will be watching for sure.

Interested to see how he plays on the left for Japan, I've never thought it suited at United but somehow they get it to work for him in the NT.

Can't say Kagawa is impressing as of yet. Honda looks like Japan's best player by far really. Kagawa is tidy, doing some good defensive work, but no edge. And what it is i heard about Japan being fluid attacking team, with high pressing and all that?
Does not look like it one bit. In fact Japan is playing a strictly as a defensive team right now. They concede possession, they defend pretty deep and they are looking for quick breaks to hurts opposition. And that was the same with 0-0. They did have 5-7 minutes of a domination just before their goal and after, but that was short-lived.
And what a strike that was from Honda, great left footer! I think he beat Toure on the way as well.:D African guys are having a kind of flat night so far. They dominate the play and possession but it's not like they created much, especially in terms of clear cut chances. Front trio are very fussy, no composure in the team, even Toure looks like a player who would dribble though like 3-4 players only to screw the final ball.

Mad Winger has made some great posts about how they play so it ought to be common knowledge that Japan plays this way. Of course against teams they can dominate the style will change as they are the ones in need of breaking down the opposition who are happy to go for a draw.

His been quiet so far, but still been disciplined which his defensive work. Honda needs to bring him in the game more when both are in their pomp they toy with defenses.

Well i don't really care how they play in Asian groups that are not high standard or in friendlies which are not competitive matches.
I see them at top tournaments, like a Confederation Cup last year and now WC. And that's what i saw. Not a attacking fluid football at all that. And Ivory Coast is not team set to dominate possession really. I mean they have two holding DMs. And they would like to play in defensive counter-attacking as well if you consider their set-up.

One of the best defensively, keeping his United form up in that regard and not sure how many tackles and interceptions he has but must be the highest of all midfielders/forwards in both teams.

His offense needs to improve though, involved but hasn't used the touches too well yet - he has another gear or two he needs to hit.

I never doubted his defensive work, to be a success in Klopp's system you need to be a hard worker.

His usually not like this for Japan, it's very similar to his United performances keeps it tidy but without any penetration.

Yeah, it looks a lot like a United performance from him rather than his usual Japan performances. Damn :(, was rooting for Shinji here not Toure.

Mad Wingers opinion isn't worth a dime when it comes to anything related to Japanese football. Incredibly biased and just seems to see what he wants to see.

Hate to say it, but I think he's been reasonably terrible tonight. Done a shift, ish, but both goals game from crosses on his side and he's offered nothing offensively at all. Also played a few horrible passes. Looks well off his game.

Was expecting a lot more from him at the WC. Hopefully next 2 matches he'll get it together, no reason Japan shouldn't have had a good shot at qualifying from this group.

So what if he likes Japanese football and Kagawa, chances are people with a bias due to a high interest is those you should be learning from as nobody without an interest will be putting the effort and time in to get to know the subject at hand. It is like saying I don't want to talk about science with Einstein because he is too biased, instead I will talk about football with him.

I think he is one of the best posters we have for the Japanese football.

Must agree, a brilliant defensive effort spoiled by a non existent offensive threat and then Japan losing the lead as well, from his flank.

The issue isn't that he likes football and Japan. I didn't say that. The issue is that we can see how he fails to see the issues with Kagawa and basically thinks he's better than he is. The problem for him is that we all watch him week in, week out and know he's talking bollocks half of the time. If you had never seen Kagawa play and wanted an idea of what he was like, Mad Winger would be the last guy on this forum that I'd recommend talking to.

All the Japanese players were quite poor. Kagawa wasn't the worst, although it wasn't a great performance.

Was shite...

Obviously hard to expect him to carry a team but, seriously, he was woeful..He done nothing of note

Especially when we consider him to be some sort of savior

Kagawa should NEVER play LM. He has no strengths suited to be a flank player and he is not good defensively. Not only is he not good defensively, he drifts inside, so then there is nobody playing in the position he is supposed to be playing. Kagawa is a central attacking player. Play him 38 games as LM and we will be completely average over the course of a season.

Shite game from pretty much all of them so you can't really lay the blame on his feet when he's a player who is the ultimate team player. He was ineffective though.

Honestly if that is the case, he's not good enough to be starting for United where we have the likes of Mata and Rooney to cover up for him.

It doesn't mean that his opinion on Japanese football isn't worth a dime though just because you disagree about Kagawa. How many more Japanese enthusiasts do we have here?

This.

I have seen nothing from him, in two years, apart from a pass and move goal against Spurs, to even suggest he is good enough for us.

I literally get the impression he's Berba with his body language half the time

..but but he doesn't supposedly earn 300k per week. Ergo, he shouldn't be singled out like Rooney is for England, should be firmly in LvG's plans and Rooney should be sold.

He's normally so much better for Japan on the left. Him and Nagatomo usually play very well together and have a good understanding. In their warm up games he was impressive, as was the team and collectively I think they bottled it tonight. Every one of them played pretty badly. Not making excuses though and he has largely been shite for United and was tonight.

Bad game from Kagawa tonight. One of the worst games in a Japanese uniform I have seen. It's a shame as he has been great in the friendlies leading up this match. The other players weren't better, but I felt he needed to step up today for his country.

Poor performance, very timid and uninventive. Lacked flair, cutting edge and so one. Did okay in defensive, but only in first half, in second he was swful at taht as well, all Ivory's danger came from Japan's left side.

But the main thing for me is that Japan proved to be nothing even remotely close to a fluid, attacking team with a high pressing that some make them out to be. I think japanese basically parked a bus of sorts. I mean look at Ivory even when they went 2-1 they still attacked and were likely to score third. Japan just closed on it's own half after a 1-0. 58-42 possession, 21-7 in shots.
Japan does have two more games to go, but i don't see them dominate Colombia. They can only maybe dominate Greece, but that like the most defensive team at the whole WC.

That's because you're only judging them off of this match.

Yes that is true. As i've said i am not really interested in friendly matches, cause they are friendly and Asian qualification group, because of the level of opponents.
I saw Japan last year on Conf Cup and though they worst in their group. Now they have two matches left, of course but right now i am not impressed.

I though a couple of days ago, when i discussed Kagawa's role in Japansese team that maybe all this style and Kagawa's more impressive performances on the left for Japan is exactly the result of weak opposition or friendly nature of other matches. As of now i think i was kind of on point. I do hope Japan will prove me wrong though.

In my eyes Kagawa at united just hasn't worked out for whatever reason. Rooney probably won't be sold, Mata won't be and Kagawa you could get a decent money for him.

Thought it was a poor match quality wise from both teams but Ivory Coast grew into game. Japan struggled to hold onto ball in final third.

I mean you call it for what it is. An underwhelming performance from Shinji. The larger issue for Japan is how they react to teams who make it difficult to pass around them. Dont seem to have rectificed that yet.
