Do Spurs now have the best defensive unit in Europe?

Personally I don’t really rate Rose so I would say that could be improved on but last year they were one of if not the best defence I had seen. But with the changes at Juve are Spurs now the best?
They're certainly tough to beat with that back 3 consisting of Alderweireld, Sanchez and Vertonghen. Interestingly, all 3 are ex-Ajax players.

I really like Spurs. I was cheering them on last night - Pochettino is likeable and so are most the Spurs players apart from Delle Ali. Forget that @GlastonSpur supports them and watching them is fun.

Good result v current European champions.

Spurs, Utd and City to run away with top 3 spots this season.

Probably not, but getting close I`d say. Our CBs, whether we play with 2 or 3 is up there I`d say. Our goalie is world class (Top 5 or so in the world). The question is our wing backs. They are definately good, but it`s probably a stretch to say we have improved so far with getting in Aurier instead of Walker. Trippier lacks a bit of physicality, pace and even positioning still. His crossing is sweet though.
Left side: Davies is super-improved, but probably lacks a bit of pace to ever reach world class bracket. Rose was very good prior to his injury. If he comes back to that level we have a super strong pairing on that side, but none of them will ever become Marcelo.

What sides in the world are better defensively then? Hard question and probably partially a matter of taste. Utd, Real, PSG, Juve and Atletico all look strong. Bayern and Chelsea are good of course. Better than our defence? Dunno actually. Strange to even consider a Spurs defence amongst the best in the world! Looking at the ability of our players and our defensive record last couple of years we must be in that top bracket surely though.

That’s the question and honestly I can’t say I’ve seen a better defence. I wouldn’t say the likes of Real, PSG and Barca are that great defensively. United aren’t good either, Arsenal, City all questions. Chelsea are pretty decent. Atletico I wouldn’t say are as good as they were but that is in part to them opening up a bit and taking more risk. So really I think Spurs have the best defence.

Good for Spurs.

Plenty to like about them: good football, lots of domestic players, never spent a lot, developed themselves... and generally a likeable set of players and manager.

Really would love to see them progress well through the CL.

I hate how good they are tbh. Fair play to them though, but I fear for us next week.

They've been clinical, albeit helped by a really inept Liverpool team.

Can they win the title this season? Surprised none of the pundits are bigging up their chances. They look to be City's biggest threat, and steadily have made progress. And Poch has a decent record against Pep.

Watching this spurs side reminds me a lot of us under sir alex. Young english players, solid defensively , so much energy. As a football fan I really hope poch does not leave them and they win some major honours this season.

What Pochettino has done given the dynamics of the league in the last few years is astonishing.

New record attendance in the PL, over 80 000.

We need to start putting a plan in place to get Poch over to OT like City did with Pep. Get him in at the end if next season and make sure he has what he needs to succeed here.

Don't think Pochetino would be much better for us, part of the reason why he's doing so well is due to the players he has at his disposal and the recruitment Spurs do. They did very well to replace Walker with Aurier, and Davinson looks a very solid player. Not 100% sure but I think a lot of that recruitment is out of Poch's hands? What we really need is someone to recruit well to improve our weak areas. Our full backs and attack options need a serious upgrade, I like Mourinho but players like Salah and Aurier moved this summer for reasonable fees and he did nothing to get them.

Sadly I see it being another 0-0. We are a lot better defensively than Pool but it's a shame you just know how Mou will set up in these games
Tbf, Mourinho had a good setup last season against Spurs. You can count on Mourinho figuring out a great tactic at home to use. It's just in away games where he's overly passive.

If Spurs play the same set up with Son and Kane linking up I can see Smalling and Lindelof (assuming they play) having all sorts of problems. Winks was impressive too, I can't see us doing much in midfield without Pogba.

We're at home, not sure Jose can justify such an approach at home. OT crowd will be restless, especially given our recent performances.

We’ll grind out a 1-0. Kane to struggle.

Hypothetical prediction aside, their transition from defence to attack is very good and a striker who gets stuck in and scores all sorts of goals. Going to be tough, but any kind of a win will be big.

When are the likes of Rose, Davies, Wanyama and Dembele fit to start?

Don't worry, plenty on here will find a way to justify it for him.

Yh, I guess my fear will be him using the exact same game plan as Pool away at home. Would love to see him start both Martil and Rashford.

very true but how woeful were Liverpool today! An absolute shambles of a club!

I'd guess that both Rose and Davies will be fit to start, but not Wanyama or Dembele. But I'm not too bothered about the latter two, because Winks and Dier are able replacements.

The Kane-Son combo was killer. Also, the three/Five-man backline has been working well against big teams. I expect the same setup at OT.

Who's best suited to play on the left against Valencia? Aurier looked good today.

Davies or Rose - both should be available and it makes the most sense to play a natural left-footer.

to be honest I reckon most centre-forwards would have been a killer against that defence. I used to respect klopp and was afraid when he joined that lot but not so now; how he can persevere with that back 5 for over two years just shows he's simply clueless

Since Alli was very effective in his return to a deeper (i.e. CM) role against Liverpool - and looked happier at not having to play with his back to goal as much as he does when playing further forward - I wonder if Poch will now give him a spell in that role?

OK, he probably won't be as much of a goal threat from CM (although he still scored on Sunday), but his mobility and energy brings a lot to CM, from where he has more scope to make surging runs forward. And in the continuing absence of Wanyama and Dembele we surely can't just run Winks into the ground match after match, and so need additional CM combo options - like Dier and Alli.

Moreover, Son and Eriksen provide plenty of support firepower further forward for Kane, so it's not as if Alli is desperately needed there.

Without Pogba, bailley,Jones, it will be like playing with a hand tied behind the back, I think spurs will beat us easily with a couple of goals. I do think spurs are more balanced squad than us and will finish above us there isnt a doubt about that. Also i only see them as challenging for the title apart from city. I think we will fall off by Christmas and scramble for fourth. Its a great team coached by a good manager with good tactical brain. i do not think he is fit to replace jose but maybe a couple of years down the line if he wins something with spurs maybe then.
