Westminster Politics

Sick of that fecker Brady and the 1922 Committee acting like they are some institution in all this. They must be loving it.

They are.... they are the ones who will 'mark our card' for the next PM to lead the Tories into the GE battle.

If only Labour had its own '2022 committee' or something similar... Mordaunt's going to be off her chair roaring her battle cries, before Sir Keir has got his coat on... time wasting on VONC, he may live to regret it. He had a golden opportunity to get up on his feet whilst the Tories dithered (still might have if he gets a move on!) with their 'choose a leader' summer fair, to be laying out the ground for the next GE, putting down the conditions, shaping the arguments, etc.

The GE is two years away...is it? whats the betting with the 'wind in their sails' from this leadership election the 'good ship' Penny Mordaunt will launch an early GE...Labour is still trying to recruit at local (Dad's Army) level... come on Keir get your finger out before its too late!

I wish we could do away with the phrase "leveling up"

It's like bullshit phrases that get waffled in meetings and then everyone rinses it constantly for the duration of a project. Utterly meaningless and designed to give a sense of progress, whilst masking the fact that nothing is getting done.

"I'm the one Labour fear most"....Penny Mordaunt

Are there shades of Maggie Thatcher here?

Oooh.......:nono: stop it, you are frightening the children

How does she know.
Has she asked them.
Sir Keir. Do you fear me the most?
Sorry. Who are you?

Kimi Badenoch seems to be using obama style vibes on her social media campaign to get some some sort of grassroots support and has some heavy hitters backing her, including the press...think she might win as the brexit / not rishi / hates trans people/ hates brown and black people candidate with the tory mps and then the members.
and then hopefully when its clear shes completely out of her depth with only her stupid culture war soundbites to fall back on, the whole house of cards collapses as the tory party eats itself.

They want a selfhate candidate?

shes probably right to be fair but mainly because
1. Sunak got fined at the same lockdown party as boris so hardly a fresh start
2. Lis Truss cant even read a statistic about cheese without sounding like an alien
3. Kemi is so far to the right she makes pritti patel seem normal
4. Braveman is so far to the right she makes Kemi seem normal
5. Tugendhat wouldnt last a month before the ERG launched a coup

No matter who wins out of these six, if Starmer can't beat them, Labour may as well pack up and go home.

Yes. Agree with that.
My own view is that Starmer has done an ok job. 5/10.
But in reality, with everything the Tories have done, Labour ought to be almost out of sight.

While I was happy that the Durham Police found no case against him and Rayner, had they not done so, there would have been a good opportunity to put someone more forceful in his place.
Anyway. We are where we are.

Would be quite something if after converting the red wall in 2019, they managed to feck it up so bad the general consensus is “oh yeah that’s why we never voted Tories before, won’t be making that mistake again!”.

Would really fly in the face of the political commentary at the time that those seats had been lost forever as the taboo seal of voting Blue had finally been broken.

Glad to see how impressed you are with the candidates.
You are an astute judge of character.

Every single one of the POC candidates/Tory ministers are "Self-hating" in the sense that they weaponise their ethnicity/heritage when convenient: see Rishi talking about his culture, family descendants etc.
While supporting policies that actively harm those same communities: send refugees to Rwanda, Windrush, stop & search, more police in black & brown communities etc.

That's why it's useless for the Tories (or anybody) to champion how 'progressive' they are by signalling how diverse their front cabinet when every single one of them is just as ghoulish as their straight white male counterparts - sometimes even more so, as a means to further distinguish themselves.

I was thinking the same myself.
But there is nothing more I would like than for our totally useless Tory MP to be well and truly sent packing. Just a brown nosed waste of space.

I'm certain Keir Starmer could come round your house with a lovely fruit basket and fresh towel and you'd still accuse him of something like not wearing his best shoes.

Oh, I get that, but would they be willing to make her leader? I think that's a step too far for them.

Though her surname is a great dog whistle. The "ethics secretary" called Bad Enoch.

+2 anyone but the Tories has just moved into the area.

Any idea who the tactical candidate will be for us?

And so it goes...

Two cabinet ministers in two days pull out of select committees
Dominic Raab has pulled out of an appearance at parliamentary committee, a move branded "extremely disappointing" by MPs and peers.
The Justice Secretary had been due to appear before the Joint Committee on Human Rights next Wednesday, where politicians had been expected to grill Mr Raab on the proposed British Bill of Rights.
It comes after Home Secretary Priti Patel pulled out of an appearance at the Commons Home Affairs Committee earlier this week.
Ms Patel cited "recent changes in Government" and to her ministerial team as well as "wider unprecedented changes" as the reasons why she was no longer able to attend the session.

If he came around to my house with such gifts I would accuse him of doing what I think he is in danger of doing already and that is sleep walking into a contest he should win, but won't if he's not careful; a contest where he needs to be up first and best dressed.

At the moment he is the only leader in plain sight, one has been vanquished already and the Tory 'wannabe's are trying to out do themselves in making daft promises.

Starmer should be leading the charge towards the next GE now, with some really really useful ideas that will appeal, not too many though, enough for people to absorb and chew on over the summer recess. If he doesn't, the new Tory PM will have a racing start on him, because the punchbag that was Boris will now be gone, everything glossed over, Starmer must not give the new PM whoever it is time to draw breath... and needs to be' full on' about the future, not the past!

Above all else Starmer must not let the new leader of the Tories get their ducks all lined up.

Well that will be 4 votes.
Kingswood used to be a Labour seat. But now has become a Tory seat. Hopefully that will change.
Sorry my friend. Still too far out for that. Will be some time until candidates are put forward.

Very much like you, I see the need for Starmer to start making a real impression. But as always happens to the leader of the opposition, the government always seems to make the running and grab the headlines.

While I voted remain, I was pleased that he has clarified Labour position on Brexit. By doing that, he has taken away any opportunity for the Tories to make a big thing about his credentials on that issue.

It's about seven years too late but all I've seen is the same nonsense from before.

Yes that's a smart move, but its still looking backwards.
The Tories for the moment are navel-gazing, now is the time for Keir to 'hit the front; he needs to make a "I have a dream' type speech, or set out massive proposal to insulate every house in the country in next five years where heating/energy losses are too high, and/ or guarantee to establish LA run Food Banks in every part of the country where income levels are below the national norm; or ...well do whatever people are worried about, to tackle it head on and do it now... set the ball rolling, so that the Tories will have to run like mad to catch up!

For me Labour should have years ago come up with the 'levelling up' solution, instead they looked to the lottery of bidding for EU funded projects to try to make a difference, some things did work, but were temporary, they stuck things together, but never touched the foundations of what was wrong. Since then the Tories have used (and abused) that notion to suit their own ends... Keir needs to run with it, turn it into a sort of 'Holy Grail' for the next ten years. Make sure everything the Government plans to do is 'sized' against the leveling up criteria, in villages, towns, etc. not just big cities.

Labour is going to get one shot at this for a generation, it must get it right!

Agree with this but would add he needs to use the green agenda to do a lot of the levelling up. Invest in green programmes in downtrodden communities to create jobs and improve quality of life.

The Tories are already pitching away from net zero so it should be the easiest policy to stand out on.

I agree, but just like the 'leveling up' mantle can put many people off because up to now its all been 'wafflised'.. Calling something 'Green' often has the same effect.
Communities get downtrodden often because they wont stand up for themselves. The Tories think they have the ownership rights on 'aspiration', but they don't; Labour needs to identify 'aspiration' within communities and then wade in there with 'levelling up', 'Green economy' etc. whatever, but make sure there are standards in play that can be measured and monitored and if targets are not met then money/funding rolls away from, not towards such communities.

That is a good point.
With the Tory candidates moving the agenda away from Net Zero policies, pushing a comprehensive green agenda would definitely play well with the public. Providing of course it is properly coated.

They would be pushing against an open door because of the public interest in green issues.

We all agree that Labour must differentiate itself from the infighting Tories.

Labour in the lords this week, whipped to abstain on free school meals for people on universal credit. Its dream land to believe Starmer would back any type of green new deal.

The electorate be like:

On Question Time just now: Labour MP Chris Byrant passionately and sincerely questioning Tory MP Bim Afolami on why he stood by Johnson for so long and it actually looked like it really shook Bim to the core.

Thought it was quite powerful actually.

This.

It is the Tory parties colonial wet dream to have "self harming" ethnic minority MPs to enact the really racist policies.

i think its more of a class / money thing with some of our brethren. i know lots of rich asians who are as racist as they come, have very strong negative views on immigrants and refugees, its really pathetic. theyve completely twisted the narrative of what our parents went through when they arrived on these shores. I also know lots of others who just as wealthy and do lots of good works so its not a stereotype as such.
