Mass shooting at Church in US

Texas was just prevented from allowing the confederate flag on license plates by a SCOTUS decision. Interestingly Clarence Thomas sided with the 'liberal' justices.

Actually Texas rejected the Confederate Flag design. A private group tried to force them to put it on the license plate but the court sided with Texas.

Heart breaking....

Christ.

There was a montage on Sky of him saying similar things since 2012. Like someone else said though, if kids being murdered didn't change anything, this won't.

I've seen that in other cases too. Is it that uncommon?

Hugely insensitive to do that after she found out her grandmother has died, but journalists don't give a shit. All they care about is getting the latest scoop first.

I'm against the death penalty but I also think it's dumb to believe in forgiveness and that some eternal judgment from god will take place.

I'm not a believer in eternal judgement myself but whatever helps them sleep at night. It does show they're coming from a better place than some redneck who is itching to execute his own sibling's child.

Nimrata Randhawa, the female governor of South Carolina, supports the Confederate flag flying over the capital because . . .“What I can tell you is over the last three and a half years, I spent a lot of my days on the phones with CEOs and recruiting jobs to this state,” Haley said. “I can honestly say I have not had one conversation with a single CEO about the Confederate flag.”

She also stated, "We´ll never understand what motivates anyone to enter our places of worship and take the life of another"

Really Nimrata, you really don´t get it? Seriously?

Interestingly, she uses her "white names" to refer to herself

It's kind of sad to think a 21 year old could get the death penalty, but the world is a much better place without people like that.

There's a fair amount of people trying to stir up a racial divide over things to do with this. If there was less of this there would be less racism in general, in my opinion.
eg.

I can't think of a better place for him to learn about racism and black people than a maximum security prison. I'm not wishing rape or violence on him, just that he ends up like Ed Norton in American History X...without the bum rape...err....but that was by his mates so it's kind of alright.

Here in the U.S, gun proponents say that guns don't kill, it's the people. My question is, what is the sole purpose of a gun?

No matter how many laws they want to introduce, or how much background checks they want to perform, it will not stop people from getting their hands on a gun. This guy in South Carolina was given a gun by his father for his birthday, the Sandy Hook killer's mother took to the shooting range for practice even though she knew he had a mental problem, eventually he took her guns and killed her and massacred all those children. There way too many examples to list here.

The only way to reduce this type of incidents is to ban guns altogether. Make it a law that no one can own guns, people who own guns need to give them up. Not everyone will given them up, but it will reduce the possibility of anyone getting their hands on a gun.

Currently, there are states where you do not need a permit to purchase or carry a gun, South Carolina being one of those states. You can walk into a lot of stores and just purchase then like anything else. It's harder to purchase cigarettes in some states than to purchase a gun.

What is this I've just switched on? The families talking directly to the suspect?

Incredible. That woman comes across as a right prick.

Makes sense given the distinction we were making in this thread yesterday and the new info that's come out since.

It was always a good guess that it would be treated as a terrorist attack given his apparent motivations, but now that concrete facts have come out, it certainly is.

Incidentally his guy's racist "manifesto" is here

“But more importantly this prompted me to type in the words ‘black on White crime’ into Google, and I have never been the same since that day.

Was clearly radicalised online through white supremacy groups, forums, websites etc. Given how much of an issue domestic terrorism is, is there anything that can actually be done to curtail it? What with freedom of speech and gun law reform not being a possibility?

I see the feckwittery from the NRA is in full force.

Apparently the pastor is to blame for the deaths for not allowing concealed guns to be carried in his church - if the victims had been armed none of this would have happened.

Wow. Does the average American not lampoon such 'logic'?

One of the sickening ironies here are that at the South Carolina state house, the American flag and the official state flag are being flown at half mast in honor of the victims, while the third flag, the confederate flag and symbol of the secessionist white supremacist South is the only one flying at full mast due to some special privilege rule or law about lowering it or removing it.

Should give you a clue to the mindset of these people. Republicans.

I was living in SC during the 1999 marches on the state capitol to remove the Rebel flag. Blacks viewed it as a symbol of discrimination, whereas whites viewed it as a symbol of "southern pride". Therein lies the controversy.

Can't they find another, less inherently racist symbol? Even South Park managed it. Kind of.

They most certainly should do. The rebel flag in a way represents residual southern pride from getting spanked during the civil war. They simply have to find a different symbol and move on.

Except that "southern pride" argument could be as valid as nazi flags for "German Pride" in German cities being flown with large jewish populations. What a bunch of crap. I´m so sick of the acceptance of this reasoning.

I think most people are tired of it, which is why hopefully they will get rid of it.

Fingers crossed this is the beginning of its end. Unbelievable that seemingly widespread racism has been able to fester for this long.

Not that I think it will happen for a long time... But when America finally catches up with most of the rest of the civilised world and puts stronger gun laws in to place how will the nra members react to for example being told to hand their machine guns in??? Will they just go to war with the police... They seem crazy enough

Republicans seem to be absolutely fine with it, including their Asian/American governor. And typically fight for it. Finally some are coming around. This is what it took. Speaks volumes of the Republican party. Volumes.

Agreed. The likes of Haley and Jindal really are a bit pathetic.
