Day 10: Belgium vs Tunisia, South Korea vs Mexico and Germany vs Sweden

Utter capitulation and cowardice from the Swedes cost them. Was rooting for them to get the winner but they threw it in the bin. Bastards.

For sure the Germans will go far in the tournament now, maybe even win the damn thing.

Durmaz would be given their highest commendation for his contribution. Definitely a turning point for them, I can see them flushing this out their system now they’ll beat SK comfortably and probably top the group then kick in to groove for the knockouts.

Sweden were playing like they were the team with 10 men - they looked absolutely awful in the last 10 mins and had chances to both slow the game down and even win it.

The moment Germany got that freekick I said to myself, 'they'll score from this', and they did. And they deserved it.
I agree. Even if they had no energy to go for the win, they should have secured the draw and they should have had more control of the situation.

Germany had terrible teams at Euro 2000 and 2004, they drew 1-1 with Lativa in 2004.

I know they reached final in 2002 but they had nearly as much luck as South Korea in the knock outs. Against USA Lahm handled the ball on the line at 0-0 but no penalty was given.

Jees I remember that 1-1 draw with Latvia. I was on the train to Lahore, which takes 18 hours, during then so had no way of watching. When I reached and read the score I wasn't even surprised.

Man, remember when we had Kevin Kuranyi and Fredi Bobic as our strikers :lol:

94, 98 quarter finals
2002 - runners up
2006 - semi (3rd place)

Euro
96 winners

Yeah, dreadful

96 is obviously the exception, but 94, 98, 00, 02, 04 were pretty bad performances, 00,02,04 maybe even rock bottom for Germany in post war times.

I'm Pakistani and have never stepped foot in Germany but I've supported Germany since '96.

What's made me invested really was the period where Germany were poor and weren't winning anything, stuck by them throughout that period (with all the ridicule from my Brazil supporting brother and cousins) and that only grew my support for them.

I would dare you to find a more avid German supporter than me :D
Germany is the most consistently successful national team in the world result wise from 96 until now.

It's like bragging about being a real madrid supporter since '98 and sticking with them through the "tough" times from 2003-2013 :D

lol :D
They went out in the first round to Switzerland, albeit this was before the World Cup had group stages, it started with the round of 16. Also, both the Netherlands and the Dutch East Indies fielded teams at the tournament, which seems rather unfair... also, Austria were disqualified and Germany also had something to do with that.

Think that tweet was looking more at the historical aftermath of that outcome....

Sane, who? Brandt is a great impact sub so far. So please finally stop this inSane talk please.

 I know... wonder how the 1942 and 1946 World Cups would have gone in an alternate universe.

Germany may celebrate tonight, but most likely they'll still only get second, meaning one heck of a face off with Brazil next round.
Pending Switzerland beating Costa Rica by more than 2 goals more than Brazil beat Serbia

Germany is a bit worse than 2014, Brazil a bit better, so only 4-1 this time.

Brandt needs to start the next game instead of Draxler. He's had more impact than Draxler in 10 mins of action.

If that bald prick had given the penalty and sent Boateng off Germany would have been out. It was the most obvious penalty ever. Even without VAR you give it. Besides, wtf was that last tackle that awarded Kroos the winning free kick? Really stupid.

Germany look utterly clapped out. Brazil will knock you out i'm sure.
You best hope something screws them up and they come 2nd.

Brazil will finish top of their group.

Mexico deserve to top their group for their level in both games. Would be a bit of a scandal tbh if Germany finish top given the respective performances. I don't see Mexico losing to Sweden.
I love Mexico tbh. Would be great if they go to a semifinal for example.

I followed the work of Osorio when he was the coach of Sao Paulo. He is a very humble and decent guy that makes you want to see him succeeding, but he has this tendency to complicate simple things in crucial moments. I believe Sweden will manage to beat them.

Mexico who have been great are on 6 points and could easily end up out while Argentina have been crap, they are on one point are still favourites to make it. It's weird how the groups work

Yes, it can be cruel. Winning two games out of three should be enough to get you through, except that isn't the case when three teams in a group win two games each with the fourth team obviously losing all their games. In that case it comes down the goal difference and then the head to head result.

Germany were terrible at WC 98 and Euro 2000. No one expected them to reach the WC final in 2002. Euro 2000 forced them to change their whole youth structure.

Germany will beat S Korea and will beat the well 4 or 5 -0, Mexico and Sweden will be close , Sweden could just nick it. The problem is the Mexico GD its is +2 to Sweden's 0, Sweden would have to win 3-0 dont see them doing that.
Germany to top the group on GD and Mexico 2nd again on GD Sweden 3rd, all with 6 points

Seriously ?? Mexico got +2 Sweden 0 . The moment Sweden score 1-0 its Mexico +1 sWEDEN +1 ..LOL

Anyone who loses to that Sweden team deserves to go out.

Someone needs to tell Low that he’s got a serious problem. Every time the camera panned to him he’s sniffing his fingers the horrible horrible bastard. Should be locked up.

You think Sweden will beat Mexico after the choke today?

What?

Each to his own. I am watching the WC as a neutral.

I really don't understand how one can support a country other than their own, it is an entirely different thing to supporting a club. The success of Manchester United belongs to Manchester United fans, but the success of Germany rightly can only belong to Germans. I can have soft spots for a country, for eg, I like Australia as I have stayed there and have many Aussies as my mates, but I really don't care overmuch about whether they win or lose. Hard to be a fan of another country and share their glory, if you can do it, more power to you.

Boateng was absolutely awful today. Brainless in possession, made senseless tackles, ran around aimlessly, gave away possession by making terrible passes and had terrible positioning. He was lucky to not concede a penalty. He shouldn't play another game in the tournament again. Or for Germany again. They need a better centre half.

It says a lot that Germany played much better after he got himself sent off.

I would not have complained if VAR called for a penalty, but overall they have been very generous in ball oriented duels - both Kane incidents, Costa vs Spain, Swiss guys on Mitrovic come to mind for example - so it might not be as obvious a mistake as one might think.

DFB-president creaming himself over Löw in his TV-interview, guess his job is safe.

I honestly think it's compulsive behaviour. Nervousness might exaggerate it too. No doubt he's a proper dodgy fecker, though.

Has any team ever gone out after winning the first 2 matches?

Dude what does Pakistan do in football

But yea, I've never had the chance to support a national team because of my nationality so yea I choose Germany because the 96' final was the first football match I saw (and started supporting United since then as well).
