The MMA thread

The controls are the main thing. It's very hard to do considering there are so many moves and defences. The last thing I'd want would be for it to be like one of the WWE games.

The graphics look amazing.

He'd hardly get a shot at the Spider would he? Has Bisping ever beaten another top notch contender to earn a shot at Silva? I don't think so.

He hasn't beaten anyone worth a damn, but, if he wins his next match, he'll get a shot at Silva. The TUF'ers are Dana's golden boys and they always get shots and hype they don't really have any business getting.

Well if he goes in against Spider I think it will be too big a step up at this stage. I think he'd be extremely lucky to go much more than 5 minutes with Silva. Silva would demolish him.

is there anybody at mw he wouldnt though?

Probably not. But maybe there are better people he could face than Bisping at the moment. It might not necessarily be good for Bisping's career or his confidence if Silva knocked the shit out of him. Bisping is being built up as most of the TUF fighters are. I think he has a bit to learn yet before he gets into the cage with Silva.

If Hendo sticks to taking Silva down and GnPing him he could beat Silva.

Hendo dominated the first round against Silva and then his machismo kicked in and since he knocked Wandy the feck out he figured how hard could it be versus this Silva?

Why do you hate Silva so much, is it because of the hype that surrounds him?

Hendo is a good fighter but he is not at Silva's level. Silva often starts slow and tends to try to find his range before getting into the fight. Hendo could knock Silva out, but on any given day and fighter could knock out another fighter.

Hendo hasn't looked great when he has fought in the UFC. I am looking forward to seeing him in a few weeks in Dublin but I think Franklin will beat him.

Oh hello, maybe a glimmer of hope for 95, it appears they are having trouble selling tickets so Rampage and Congo are being rumoured to be added to the card.

http://www.mmabay.co.uk/rampage fighting at ufc 95.html

Rampage would obviously be a great addition to the card but he has only fought last week.

Congo must be my least favourite fighter. He only fought last week as well.

Anyway, if the two of them were on the card it would make it decent but they would have to have decent opponents to make it worthwhile.

A bit unrelated but Joe Rogan is doing a gig in the Sugar Club on the 16th of January. I could be worth going to. Apparently there does be a lot of UFC people at his gigs.

Anyone see Roger Huerta has left the UFC to pursue a acting/modeling career?

“I saw that you have to dedicate as much as you do to training for a fight as you do for an acting role and I’m intrigued by that. I’m 25 years old. I see Chuck Liddell and Randy Couture and they didn’t really hit their primes till their thirties. I’m only going to be young so long and I know that movies and agencies and what not want the young look...

Pursuing the modeling and acting thing, that’s kind of where I’m at right now. The fighting will always be there. I’ll always have that in me. The truth is I’ve been fighting my whole life for everything, and this to me, is something else.”

Weird.

Weird.

very wierd...

1 he has a very cool tattoo cos its qiote similar to mine...

2 whan he did when he used the screen to elbow somebody was genius

3 he was so close with florian that if he sticks at im im sure he will be w lw champion at somepoint bexause hes so young...

very very wierd...

The most likely outcome.

perhaps its back to this ufc contract where they want a slice of all the advertising / sponsership income... maybee they would have wanted a cut of his movie money?

i hope its just something like that and he comes back after a year cos hes a great fighter and usually great entertainment on a fight card

He certainly puts on exciting fights, but from the interview that I read I felt that he really thinks he's going to make it big as an actor.

perhaps he will...

hes certainly a likeble bloke when he talks... and my mrs reliably informs me hes pretty hot... so if he can act????? then who knows

well as ufc 93 is almost up on us i suppose its predictions time...

must admit im not super excited about the card but sometimes the fights you least expect turn out to be propper wars...

anyway im going to say

Franklin vs Henderson
Rua vs Coleman
Kang vs Belcher
Palahres vs Horn
Davis vs Lytle

Hate him? He is one of my favorite fighters. However I see through the marketing and blatant fanboism. He fights in an extremely weak division. This is the same sort of craziness surrounding Chuck Liddell a few years ago.

People were jizzing their pants over Chuck being the greatest fighter of all time, when all he had done is beat up a bunch of "ok" wrestlers that can't strike their way out of wet paper bags.

Silva has good Muay Thai and finishes fights. His ground game is overrated and he is VERY susceptible to a good wrestler that can take him to the ground and keep him there.

In the way that Chuck was susceptible to anyone that could throw short and straight punches, Anderson can be beaten by Dan Henderson. I'm not sure what is so controversial here. Dan took Silva down in their first fight and controlled and dominated the first round. The second round came out and Dan, who is notorious for wanting to stand and trade, abandoned a winning formula and tried to trade with Silva. Silva was far too technical for him and took him apart standing.

Here is some food for thought as to why Silva is nowhere near being the best P4P fighter in the world.

Fedor walks around at over 230 pounds.

Silva walks around at over 220 pounds.

Fedor if he cleaned up his diet and leaned out could EASILY fight at 205 and he could cut water to ALMOST reach 185.

I can't even imagine what Fedor would do to Silva at 205. It wouldn't be competitive. Silva would get rag dolled.

I finally get GSP vs. Penn and I'm in Iraq. DAMN!!!

im sure you can ger a streem...

unless your in the army and thats just not possible... in which case an accidental discharge of your weapon (and i am talking about your gun NOT your cock) into the foot might be called for...

Agree with this. I'd be kinda 50 50 on the Davis Lytle fight though.

An interesting article on Sherdog previewing the first Irish UFC fighter Tom Egan, for anyone who is interested.

http://www.sherdog.com/news/articles/2/UFC-93-Breakdown-The-Undercard-15775

Tom “The Tank” Egan Scouting Report
Ht/Wt: 5’11/170 lbs.
Age: 20
Hometown: Dublin, Ireland
Fighting out of: Dublin, Ireland
Record: 3-0

The stakes: Normally, this would be the part where I blather on about Egan being a UFC rookie who needs to prove his worth. Let’s be real here: Egan is from Ireland and his opponent, John Hathaway, is from England. If I need to explain why that matters, you should have paid attention in high school world history instead of sitting at home trying to impress your friends by making a bong out of an apple.

Extracurricular activities and nationalistic rivalries aside, we’ve seen the UFC bring in plenty of local talent for European shows before, and those that fail to impress don’t get to make the trip back across the pond.

The breakdown: Egan is getting his big break early in the game with only three professional fights under his belt, but he does have a strong boxing base and the power to back it up. What remains open to debate is how UFC-ready Egan’s grappling is, especially when you consider the ham-and-eggers he’s feasted on thus far.

Testing out your grappling against Hathaway’s swarming ground-and-pound would be worthy of a Darwin award nomination. For that reason, Egan needs to establish his boxing from the opening bell and show Hathaway that stepping forward will carry a heavy toll.

John “The Hitman” Hathaway Scouting Report
Ht/Wt: 5’10/170 lbs.
Age: 21
Hometown: Brighton, Sussex, England
Fighting out of: Brighton, Sussex, England
Record: 9-0

The stakes: Besides being the latest avatar for England in its ongoing rivalry with the Irish, Hathaway enters this bout with some hype attached to his name as one of England’s premier welterweight prospects. Whether or not that is a product of Hathaway’s skill or the middling competition that makes up his resume is the question he must answer in his UFC debut.

Given the mutant shark tank that is the UFC welterweight division, Hathaway, and Egan for that matter, had better hope that they can get more than just the locals singing their praises.

The breakdown: This one is simple for Hathaway: Don’t go mucking it all up by trading with Egan. From what I’ve seen of Hathaway’s striking, it’s mostly telegraphed punches that have all the force of a pillow-fight behind them. Keeping the boxing to a minimum would be in the best interests of his baby-face mug.

If Hathaway is serious about keeping his teeth securely in his mouth, he needs to get after Egan early with takedowns and swarm his inexperienced quarry with strikes and submission attempts. From there, Hathaway’s strong positioning and accurate striking should be all he needs to tip the balance in favor of the Britons.

* * *

The bottom line: I’ve never been too keen on doubling down with unproven boxers in MMA, and this bout is no exception. Egan may have the edge on the feet, but he’s not Ireland’s answer to Floyd Mayweather, and Hathaway’s tremendous pace on the mat is something Egan is unprepared for.

Irish Mayweather goes down in the first round thanks to British ground-and-pound. Damn, I shouldn’t have read that Ali biography.

So is anyone going to UFC 93? I'm heading to the event and the weigh-ins. Joe Rogan is doing stand up in the Sugar club tomorrow evening but I could not get tickets. They sold out too quickly. The after show party is on in the Vaults. I can't go as my bros have a big cup match the next morning and have to go home straight after the UFC! And I wouldn't go on my own, plus it's a bit of a shithole.

It's a half decent card anyway so it should be good.

I was at the UFC last night, it was class. The fights on the undercard were probably better than the main card itself!

Anyway, I'm watching the replay now on Setanta. For some fecking reason, Setanta edited it and only showed the 3rd round of the Marcus Davis - Chris Lytle fight which was by far the best fight and it had the best atmosphere. What the feck is that about? They only show one round of the fight who everyone wanted to see?

They showed the Lytle/Davis full fight live. It was a great fight.

Rua looked quite poor I thought.

Henderson/Franklin was an enjoyable fight too I thought.

They didn't show it on the replay for whatever reason.

Rua looked good in the first round but after that he was gassed. I was very surprised that he didn't take Coleman out in the first round if not the second. Coleman was quite clearly fecked after half of the first round and he was practically unable to defend himself. Shogun was the main fighter I wanted to see and he really was disappointing. Maybe he is still recovering from all those knee operations. Anyway, if he wants to beat any of the other top contenders like Griffin, Machida, Silva, Rampage, Wanderlei, Franklin or Henderson, or even get a shot at Rashad, he would have to improve dramatically. He is fighting Chuck at UFC 97 so that will be his chance. He really needs to work on his cardio. Coleman's heart really got the fans going. He wasn't the post popular but by the end of the fight people were cheering him. Shogun was obviously a fan favourite though. I really hopes he can get back to his best when he was recognised as the best 205lb fighter in the world.

Henderson/Franklin was a decent fight, that's about it. Franklin was unlucky to lose but Hendo probably slightly shaded it. The judge who gave it 30-27 to Frankin must have been drinking. Franklin would be one of my favourite fighters and I was a bit surprised he wasn't more offensive in the first couple of rounds. It cost him the win.

Davis and Lytle was a tremendous fight. The atmosphere was amazing. It didn't sound as loud when I watched it on the telly but there was serious atmosphere, throughout the whole show. I was reading some MMA forums and people were genuinely delighted with the fans and atmosphere at UFC 93. Most reckoned it was the second best atmosphere that there ever was, only beaten by the UFC in Montreal. Considering less than 10,000 fit into the O2, that's not bad.

It's a pity Tom Egan was fighting in my opinion. They only rushed him into the UFC because he was Irish and he was totally outclassed by Hathaway who was far more experienced. Egan is only 20 and he needs a lot more training to be close to good enough to fight in the UFC. He showed that he has the qualities to make it. The crowd would have gone crazy if he had of won.

Overall, the undercard fights were a lot better than the main card. I thoroughly enjoyed it.

I enjoyed it, maybe some good news, although I'll believe it when I see it.

Dana was interviewed after 93 & asked why the card for 95 was so weak & this is what he had to say...

"Whats wrong with it, I didn't know people were pissed".

"There's no star power? We tried to do Chuck Liddel over here, the first time he ever gets injured. Believe me, we've shown how commited we are in the UK, we try to put on the best cards we can put on".

Dana did assure better news for the UK audience with a PROMISE of a title fight in the UK this year.

"That is true (the UFC haven't had a title fight in the UK since UFC 80) and the answer is yes, we will have a big fight this year. Thats a promise".

well there is still only 4 fights confirmed for ufc 95 and we are only a month out???

either tey have just not announced the rest of the fights (because they are poor quality?) or there is going to be some out of shape fighters getting in the cage...

i imagine they will be back to the uk later in the year and have a title fight then...

but if you think that there are rumors or 3 or 4 title fights at ufc 100 and penn and gsp fight at the end of this month its quite possible there will only be 1 title fight between now and ufc 103?... not sure how that would work out????

ive actually come to the decision that i hopw there is no more big fights coming to london... in the hope that at least dan should then be on the main card

If UFC come to dublin again, I'll definitely be there. I was offered a ticket and a spin last thursday, but I'm going to Manchester a few times in the next few months so I couldn't afford it, I was gutted.
