MERGED: Rooney signs new contract!

Anyone excited about 2 hours of football and not having to think about this tomorrow?

United are perfect for Rooney, I can't see how any other manager could come close to controlling him.

Mancini? feck off

Well Ferguson can't leave Rooney on the bench for longer than the January transfer window (if that in fact) without him walking out on a free under the FIFA 'Just Cause' Transfer Regulations.

I really hope Hernandez and Owen get more game time from now on, would rather have someone who wants to play be on the pitch.

I disagree. Today's events might tarnish the fondness he's remembered with by United, but it shouldn't tarnish the work he did here. It's sad to see United fans react by deriding his efforts in a United shirt. All of us lucky enough to see his 6 seasons here should know better.

If he wasn't world class he wouldn't be in the position he's in whereby he can likely pick any club in the world and move there, Barcelona and Real Madrid included.

He's an odd player to categorise, Rooney. There might be better pure strikers out there but there are few better out and out footballers, and very few individuals you'd rather have on your team. He's clearly world class to me.

Why do people keep thinking this? Real Madrid and Barca don't want him, they already are fully stocked with just as much or even more talented players in the positions that Rooney can play. His lack of true technical ability with the ball at his feet would be found out in Spain. His style of play is not fit for La Liga.

and at this point there are MANY individuals I would rather have playing for my team

His head and his heart are probably not even here anymore, so he really doesn't have much motivation to play better for us, what's the point?

Am just blown away by this news. One time I'll go against being reasonable and if Rooney does leave after all he has said about wanting to leave and much as the club and fans have got behind him ... I will wish the nastiest things possible to happen to him.

Absurd reaction on my part but, an absurd situation.

Let him rot and give Kiko and Chicharito a real go. Get the loanees back while we are at it. Who gives a feck?

Mourinho DOES want him but he's out because City have a verbal agreement with Rooney.

And you're still a bit of a spastic by the look of it.

I think their work is done to be honest. Rooney will have to man up and faces the cameras himself next.

Messing us about in other words?
Like I've said in other threads, IF it's just personal problems things may settle down in a few months time and he'll happily sign a new contract. I'm sure most of us have been in a dark place where we're not thinking clearly for a while, and I'm hoping that's all that's happening here. That's why I'm hoping the fans don't get on his back too much until we know more about what the hell is going on.

I'm really not enjoying the City fans gloating over this....

Get used to it - they'll be winning the double soon and such like. Of course, just like Chelsea, it will be tainted by the fact that their progression wasn't natural, and therefore any non-City fans will view it as a hollow victory, only made possible by the cash the owners have chucked around.

I think its obvious something big has been agreed... you don't just turn down a contract at United without foundation. Remember this was decided in August. I just hope we have planned for his departure.

My internet went down just as the first reports came from the press conference. Must say that I am quite surprised.

For what it's worth I say feck him. Whatever the real reason might be, there is only one version I care about and that is Ferguson's. Rooney has been good for us, he was our best player last year, but hasn't been good since March. If we can get a good price for him and get a good replacement I think we'll be ok. Bit afraid about what this will do for other big players like Vidic, Evra etc.

...he sticks Rooney in the stands from now until he goes (assuming he does go)?

Even if it results in us winning nothing this season?

Discuss

He's not done a tap all season so how is it gonna change between now and when he goes , his heart is gone so make him train with the kids , give him no special care and attention and no fecking fanfare when he gets booted in January

I think he will stay.

I just watched Fergies interview from MUTV. As long as what Fergie says is 100% true, watching that must have made Wayne think hes at the right club.

Genius from Fergie.

I don't know if he'll stay but it was pure genius

"The fans were chanting his name" (The fans want you to stay ffs!)
"There's always a contract if he wants it" (Keeping all doors open)
All the help we've given him
The genuine upset on his face
Saying he's let the club down a bit

Perfect, we're about to see just how deeply motivated by money Rooney really is.

Rooney isn't and never has been a World Class player, one season no matter how good doesn't make you World Class, do it for 2/3/4 seasons on the bounce and you have a point, he didn't and as a result isn't.

3 games from winning the CL is bullshit, does this mean Lyon have a legitimate claim to having the trophy within their grasp?

As i said before, the whole 'world class' debate is flawed because the criteria is different from person to person.

But yeah, he's never been what you'd call a prolific striker but your worth as a player, even a striker, is not all about how many goals you score. That's the reason we've loved him as much as we have. There is so much more to him than just goals.

Take him out of our team over the past 5-6 years and can you really say we would have acheived as much as we have? Would we have been a constant in the top echelon of club football during that period? I'd be inclined to think we wouldn't have done quite so well. When we lost Ronaldo & Tevez and people (some of our own fans included) were convinced the end of our reign at the top of English football was near, Rooney stepped out of Ronnie's shadow with a fantastic season by any standard and i'm sure that, had we won the CL that season, he'd have been crowned Player of the Year.

As i said, i'd be very interested to see the results of a poll consisting of all players, managers and coaches on whether they consider Rooney world class. I'd bet that the vast majority would.

Edit: Did we just officially hit meltdown?

"When" he plays ?......."If" he plays ?.
It can go either way. Rooney has just lost all his "lifelines"....theres no goodwill left between him and the fans.

IF he plays....and plays badly.....the crowd will get on his back. And Rooney is a loose cannon. You could very easily see him reacting...leaving the pitch at Old Trafford...in much the same way he did when he left the pitch in South Africa (after the Algeria game).
He has form in that respect.
But likewise if he gets a 92nd minute winner in a game, the crowd will cheer him to the rafters......"Good old Roo" and "Fergie Fergie sign him up".

But not having played at Goodison Park, I cant actually see him playing at Eastlands. Effectively he will only be available for some matches. Whether Injury, Form or "his head isnt right"......he is already an ex-United player.

Football fans are frankly stupid. It took me 50 years to grow out of it. We invest too much trust in players. They let us down. Well some do. But in the case of Rooney it seems it cant be fixed.
The Manager might actually mean it when he says the door is still open. But it would never be the same again.
In a few months.....good ole Wayne will be just another scouser.

Hes not a nice person. Some footballers are not nice people. Some are very nice people.
Some people are born into situations which are difficult. Many do well...........having a decent family is the one true advantage in life. And being a good business man, or thru education or thru football people can rise above "social difficulties".
But I feel sorry for Alex Ferguson and the staff at Old Trafford.
Sometimes you cant make a silk purse out of a sows ear.

Quality post this. I learned after Becks left that you support the club. Not the players. Not because I had anything against David but you understand the fickle nature of football and that players come and they go. I'm only disappointed in Rooney. I expected better from him. Not necessarily to be the next Giggs/Scholes but if he did left, it would be in better circumstances. If he wants more money, fine but to say a club that has won him 8 major honours, challenging on all fronts and made him the player he is, "has no ambition?" And "doesn't want to carry United again this season" borders on an arrogance which I didn't expect but he is what he is. I don't fault him for wanting to leave. Just how he's leaving and frankly, I wish he never wore the jersey ever again. Not even a training kit or a cap.

Well, I don't know how much City've offered, and trust me, they've offered him a contract....but one can only assume it's a lot more than he's getting at United, and that type of cash can make a mercenary out of anyone. That being said, I still expected more from Rooney. Oh and I've just been listening to Ballague and he said Mourinho and Real suspect he's already made a verbal agreement with City. So, my hunch yesterday was right.

Too right he has and I bet he had that agreement sorted just after the World Cup.

I reckon SAF has held back with the public announcement in the hope that he changes his mind. However, Rooney's scummy representatives decided it was time to bring this whole dirty deal into the public forum.

I do hope that the Shitty feckers get exposed!!

Would Fergie expose a city deal in an attempt to pile more pressure should this attempt not reverse his decision?

Mourinho feels it to be the case which is why he won't be bidding. I see no reason why it's not true. Otherwise there's no way he would've shown his cards.

Do we actually know Mourinho thinks that or is that just based on Ballague's speculation?

All I've heard is that Mourinho feels Rooney will stay at United which I thought was interesting...

It'll be interesting, but ive meet a few people around Europe this year and whenever i've asked them if they regard Rooney World Class all said no. They said he was a special kind of player but none would go as far as saying he was world class.
