Luka Modric / Signs for Real Madrid

He's scored 3 goals and had 3 assists in the league this season. No way are we going to blow £40 Mil on him. Never thought I would say this, but I would rather keeep Carrick and try and sign someone a bit cheaper. Spurs pulled our pants down over Berbatov and the same would happen here. I like Modric and would like to see him here, but not for that price.

And he was poor in the "big games".

40mil is too much but I wouldn't read to much in to his stats. Modric plays quite deep so he won't really be making the final pass but he'll be the one putting in a great pass for the likes of bale who'll then be in a position to put in a telling ball.

Must say I've always been a fan of him, and I think he's stifled at Spurs playing in that stupid system, although I saw someone mention that he'd gone missing in a big game 'again', which I've never noticed, but it's not a good trait for a footballer to have, especially in midfield. Plus his shooting's fecking dire. He barely ever scored, so he'd essentially play in Carrick's role, but £40M is absolute extortion. In fact I'd say anything over £30M is.

No way he'll go for 40m. Glaston can convince himself that it'll take 40m to price Modric away from Spurs, but if they continue their bottle act and finish out of the top4, then I can't see Modric staying there at Spurs.

Can't make a decision about him. Obviously very good, but I can't shake the feeling he'll disappear in a bigger club and not handle the pressure.

He's been poor for a lot of the season particularly of late but he needs to play CM not AM which is what Redknapp's been doing for 3 months. He would be a great buy for Man Utd but it won't happen.

He'd be a good pickup, but Spurs have essentially come out and said they're only going to sell if someone pays through the nose, and Sir Alex isn't interested in overpaying.

I want more goals and assists from a midfielder for 40m!!!

Stats aren't everything though, see Iniesta. And then you have some Barca fans complaining about Fabregas who has a lot of goals/assists.

He is the type of player we should get. We need someone who can replicate what Paul Scholes does for us, which is get the ball wide with precision passing and dictate possesion. The best our midfield has looked all-around is with Scholes and Carrick, and neither of them can be described as a creative midfielder in the ilk of Sneijder, Ozil or Gotze or solely defensive midfielders.

My point is, the way both Scholes and Carrick play, works for us and the system we use. We should try and find players who are similar (there are a few and Modric is one of them) so it will be an easier transition than taking an attack minded midfielder and trying to mold them into something they aren't, like we did with Anderson.

From the guardian..

The Tottenham manager, Harry Redknapp, has admitted that Luka Modric may quit the club this summer.
Tottenham fought a ferocious battle with Chelsea to keep hold of Modric last summer, with the Blues making up to three bids for the playmaker – the biggest one thought to be £40m.
The north London club managed to hold on to their star midfielder and he has rewarded them with a series of fine performances that have left the Manchester City manager, Roberto Mancini, purring.
Speculation about Modric's future, and that of Gareth Bale, will only intensify if Tottenham fail to qualify for next season's Champions League.
Redknapp is confident Bale will stay at White Hart Lane this summer despite Barcelona's reported interest in the player, but he is less than certain about the commitment of Modric, who is yet to pen a new deal despite being promised one last summer.
"Last summer it was vital that we kept hold of Luka," Redknapp, who is confident his team can win all four of their remaining games and leapfrog Newcastle and finish fourth in the league, said. "I don't think we will have to do it with people like Gareth Bale this summer. Luka, it's different with him. I don't know what he would do. I would be lying if I said I was sure that he would stay. You don't know. But certainly I wouldn't see Gareth Bale wanting to leave here. At the moment he is happy here, a big fish here. He is still learning the game, a young boy, and this is where he needs to be."

And so it begins

He won't be coming here some honestly don't care what he does

Chelsea are taking a leaf out of our book by signing Marin for much cheaper than whoever of equal talent is being hyped in the press. I think Fergie will do the same over the summer.

Rednapp is known as a wheeler dealer for a reason, he makes money from buying and selling players. He has it written into his contract FFS, England job, do me a favour. Gareth Bale is off to the highest bidder. Modric, no chance.

Can't see him staying whatever happens. He wants to be challenging for, and winning, trophies and he isn't likely to get that at Spurs.
If Spurs do qualify for another shot at the CL then I reckon Modric will be staying.

His incentive for leaving will be less. And he'll still have 4 years left on his contract, which means Levy continues to hold all the cards.

With all the talk of Hazard and Martinez it's amazing that it's now Modric that I feel is quite possibly the most likely star player the club could bring in. I dont see Spurs hanging onto him even if they do make the UCL nor do I see him being priced quite as high as the 40m he was last summer.

He hasn't had the greatest of seasons this season (probably because he no longer wants to be there) but he'd drastically improve us :(

Yeah I could see him signing. Everyone seems to have gone off the idea now though and is keen for us to get a more imposing figure in the midfield as opposed to a little playmaker.

I think we are crying out for a bit of grit in the middle of the park myself

If you've got players capable to keeping the ball (like Barca do) you dont really need a destroyer in there. I'd imagine Carrick and Modric could keep the ball for fun with the latter having a bit more of a cutting edge to his play

What about Scholes and Modric with Carrick sitting in?

I see what you are saying though. I always think a destroyer is handy to have to be honest and we have never replaced Hargreaves.

Martinez and Modric, make it happen :)

Helps quite a lot that Martinez is very well adapted at the back too, if we sign those both - we would be in a very healthy shape for next season.

He wasn't "priced" at 40m, that's just the figure bid by Chelsea that Levy rejected.

So Levy's "price" was unknown: we can only say that it was higher than 40m.

Modric would be everything we need. The only problem would be the price. I may just be secretly rooting for Chelsea in the final so theres a higher chance he'd leave if he doesn't get CL at spurs next season.

But if Chelsea win the CL surely they are in pole position to sign him?

Modric is without a doubt the #1 signing in my eyes. He provides exactly what we need and after Fergies comments about not using a pure holding player, Modric ticks all the boxes. He can play in a 2-man midfield, he provides a bit of composure on the ball, creativity and is great at the little one touch passing spells that we like to play.

Above that though is flexibility. Modric can play on the wings, eliminating the need for us to sign another winger, and he can play the more advanced #10 role meaning we have great cover for Rooney if he is injured, or if we want to play him as an out and out striker.

In short, Modric is ideal and whilst the price is an issue, signing him would eliminate the need for another signing, be is almost like 2 in 1 because he fixes so many of our problems. He is the player we all hope Cleverley can become, he is experienced in the PL already and his wage demands probably wont be as obscene as most of the other names being banded about.

If we where to go out and spent big money on a proven player Modric would probably be the one player I would like to see us buy. He is a proven PL player and would have a good chance of settling in quickly. I know there is a lot of talk that we need a "Yaya Toure" ie a big beast of a player but last year after the Cl final people where saying we need a Snjeider. There are many different type of CM and styles of play. For me Modric as a ball player and a passer is a better option than a ball carrier like Toure.

I just think for european football a passer is better than a ball carrier.

And I'm saying I don't think it will be that high this year ;)
OK, you think Modric will be sold - and sold for less than the 40m rejected last summer.

What reasons do you have for thinking this?

The reason why i think he will be sold:

1) Not played as well as last year
2) I think he is now 27, at his peak, and he will know this will be his last chance of moving to a big club
3) If Chelsea win CL, then he is more likely to leave so he can play in UCL.
4) Spurs are not going to win anything
5) If he kicks a fuss again, i can't see Spurs trying to persuade him to stay again, they will accept max £40m.

It's the same situation as that with Fabregas last summer; player agrees to stay one more year without kicking up and almighty fuss on the proviso he's allowed to leave a year later. No one is going to pay £40 for Modric so you'll have to let him go for what clubs are willing to pay (within reason)

Modric has never been a £40m player

You dont really believe there was a 40m bid turned down, do you?
It was in the mail or some tabloid and Harry referred to it saying he didnt know anything else.
No one is bidding 40m for him.

Its a bit irrelevant what you think he's worth though, to be fair to Glaston. If Levy isn't selling for less than £40m, there's feck all anybody can do about it unfortunately, including Modric. Levy is unbelievably stubborn

At times like these we have to look to our feeder clubs.

Spurs is a natural first port of call.

I'd love to see Modric in a United shirt next season.

Fabregas was a £40m player and Arsenal didnt get it because he wanted to leave, Spurs are in the same position so no it's not irrelevant

This, I don't buy into this argument that Chelsea will struggle with bringing players in if they do not qualify for the champions league as it is symptomatic of the issues at hand rather than the root cause.

Footballers want to go to the clubs where they can have lasting careers at great clubs, where there is an encouraging likelihood of winning something and qualifying for the champions league is normally though not necessarily a barometer of that. However whatever happens Chelsea is a more desirable destination than certainly Arsenal and Tottenham at least because they will most probably be better placed in the title race on the opening day of next season.

The fact that Chelsea are in the showpiece game of club football on Saturday regardless of the result nullifies much of the qualification argument, by just being in it puts them on the highest plane amongst the elite of European clubs. As such I really do struggle seeing any players determining that Tottenham is a better destination than Chelsea.
