He kept the ball far better than Rooney
He kept the ball better than everyone else in the team barring Carrick.
He kept the ball far better than Rooney
RvP kept the ball better than Kagawa and also did more with it.
Yep. But then Rooney was playing on the outside right.
Why should playing wide effect Rooneys effectiveness? it baffles me that a player playing for the biggest club in England, and dubbed the best English player of his generation, can be so on and off with his touch and passing.
His stamina / work ethic isnt what it was when he was younger, and for the job he was doing valencia would of been more effective IMO.
I really thought RVP was invisible for most patches of the game, and the miss...
I might need to watch the game again.
I just think tactically he should not be played in a wide role anymore. His stamina / work ethic isnt what it was when he was younger, and for the job he was doing valencia would of been more effective IMO.
People will say but Rooney carriers a bigger threat - not when he is chasing backwards all game.
Btw, Playing wide would affect Zidane's effectiveness, and so did with Messi. What sort of logic is this ?
Kagawa needs a player like Cleverley on the pitch for neat pass and move type play, can't just shunt him out wide and expect him to do a lot by himself.
Both Zidane and Messi were superb in wide positions.

His hold-up play and ball retention were immense. Time and again he'd emerge from tight pressure with the ball. One of our best players on the night.
No where near to how they are playing in the middle. That's the point.
Zidane is yesterday's game asked to track back on the right would have been interesting.

You think they would've attacked and left Zidane free up there. Well that would be suicide.
Rooney had 60% pass accuracy last night because he can't get himself out of a tight spot, you think Zidane or Messi have ever had 60% pass accuracy?
Ozil was 63, he isn't bad in a tight spot.

Not sure where you're getting those stats from Dion? Özil was the joint best on the pitch with 91%

Wish I could have seen the game to see how he played. I followed him when hes played in your games and wanted to see him on the big European stage but sky whored the game last night!
Gageing a consensus by reading this thread is like reading hieroglyphs, he appeared to range from incredibly poor, weak and bullied to confident, good and a class act.
ITV don't even show highlights anymore. What exactly did he do wrong?

Nothing wrong, he just wasn't involved as much as people would of liked which was predictable considering we preferred the ball in behind for people to run on to, and that isn't a big part of his game really.
I don't get this weak/pushed off the ball thing either - it's been exagerated greatly in Kagawas time here.
I don't think that's the case at all. It really is a genuine weakness in his game and this wasn't the first time he was shown up due to a lack of upper body strength. Rooney himself is quite poor with his back to goal but Kagawa is worse
It was 63% according to the broadcasters at around the 75 minute mark on tv.
Strange, although I'd trust whoscored, they are usually bang on. Anyone got ESPN stats to back this up?
Just looking with my own eyes I'd seriously doubt that Özil or Carrick were in the 60's with their passing.
Not really. Carrick played plenty of long balls up field yesterday and most of them didn't find their mark and I remember lots of Ozil's passes going wide of their mark
Not really what Ash?
For Carrick to have been in the 60's (let's say 65%), it would've meant that have passed to no-one on 16 occasions and found a red shirt 29 times. My eyes tell me there's simply no chance of that being true.
Would love someone with ESPN stats to back me up though.
